Early detection and prompt treatment is vital to control transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).</p><p>We are concerned to see the increase in STIs which highlights the importance of people practicing safe sex by using condoms. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/01/2020 answer text <p>Of all bacterial sexually transmitted infections, antimicrobial resistance is primarily a concern for gonorrhoea and Mycoplasma genitalium.</p><p>Public Health England (PHE) undertakes comprehensive surveillance through the Gonococcal Resistance to Antimicrobials Surveillance Programme. This surveillance programme enables early detection and management of antibiotic resistance in gonorrhoea. This intelligence is used to advise on national gonorrhoea treatment guidelines to ensure they remain effective.</p><p>PHE offers a service to detect antibiotic resistance in Mycoplasma genitalium which can help clinicians give the most appropriate treatment to patients. These include better detection through policies that increase testing among those most at risk of STIs and behavioural changes that increase the risk of transmission of STIs.</p><p><em>Sexually transmitted infections and screening for chlamydia in England, 2018,</em> published in June 2019, accompanies the most recent annual official statistics release of data about sexually transmitted infections in England. The report states that the total number of sexual health screens (tests for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and HIV) has increased over the last five years (22%; from 1,603,744 in 2014 to 1,955,108 in 2018). The report considers the role of sexual behaviours such as an increase in partner numbers and condomless intercourse in the increases seen. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/02/2024 answer text <p>The number of new sexually transmitted infections diagnosed among 15 to 24 years olds has increased by 29.3% from 2021 to 2022, or from 135,045 to 174,592. In particular:</p><p>- chlamydia diagnoses have increased 26%, from 88,367 in 2021 to 111,380 in 2022;</p><p>- gonorrhoea diagnoses have increased 91.7%, from 16,919 in 2021 to 31,037 in 2022;</p><p>- first diagnoses of genital herpes have increased 14.4%, from 8,270 in 2021 to 9,461 in 2022;</p><p>- diagnoses of infectious syphilis, including primary, secondary, and early latent, have increased 11.1%, from 968 in 2021 to 1,075 in 2022; and</p><p>- first diagnoses of genital warts have decreased 23.3%, from 7,559 in 2021 to 5,801 in 2022.</p><p>The data represents the number of diagnoses reported and not the number of people diagnosed. Data reported in 2020 and 2021 is notably lower than previous years due to the disruption to sexual health services during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which reduced access to face-to-face appointments. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 14/06/2019 answer text <p>It is concerning to see the increase in sexually transmitted infections, and we would encourage people to practice safe sex by using condoms and to access their free, local sexual health services if they consider themselves to be at risk of infection. Local authorities have been mandated to commission comprehensive open access sexual health services and are best placed to understand and meet the public health needs of their local communities.</p><p>Data published by Public Health England show that more people are accessing sexual health services, with attendances increasing by 7% between 2017 and 2018. This continues the trend of increases in attendances seen over the past five years. To help manage the overall increase in demand, online services are increasingly being commissioning to manage lower risk and asymptomatic patients.
