	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/03/2021 answer text <p>On 18 February 2021, the Government announced that the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and UK Research Innovation (UKRI) had been awarded £18.5 million in funding for four research projects to help understand and address the longer-term health effects of COVID-19 in non-hospitalised patients.</p><p> </p><p>As research into the long-term health symptoms and impacts of COVID-19 is ongoing, we are collaborating across Government to monitor emerging evidence and consider our response.</p><p> </p><p>People with a condition arising from exposure to the Covid-19 virus are able to access Personal Independence Payment in the same way as other people with long-term health conditions or disabilities. Disability benefits do not include or exclude by condition, instead they look at the needs arising from a long-term health condition or disability.</p><p> </p><p>Financial support is available through Statutory Sick Pay, Universal Credit, New Style ESA. People who have symptoms of Long Covid should see their GP, if their health condition impacts on their ability to work a fit note may be issued. Those on low pay can receive more help through the welfare system, depending on their personal circumstances. As has always been the case, our assessment providers will initially try to complete paper-based assessments, where there is sufficient evidence to make a recommendation. If this is not the case, providers will currently look to carry out a telephone assessment, where appropriate. We offer reasonable adjustments for claimants who may need additional support to engage in a telephone assessment. We continue to monitor the impact of COVID-19 on disabled people using existing and new data sources.</p><p>The Minister for Disabled People, Health and Work has had discussions with charities, disabled people's organisations and individuals to understand the range of experiences disabled people have had during the COVID-19 pandemic and to identify the support needed as lockdown restrictions are eased.</p><p>We are ensuring that disabled people continue to have access to disability benefits, food, medicines, essentials, accessible communications, updated guidance, including workplace and transport related guidance, as well as financial and other support during the COVID-19 outbreak.</p><p>The Government continues to provide disability employment support through initiatives such as Access to Work, Disability Confident, the Work and Health Programme, Intensive Personalised Employment Support, and other forms of support that disabled people need to retain, adapt and move into employment.</p><p>The Cabinet Office Disability Unit works with disability stakeholders and across Government Departments to ensure that the needs of disabled people are considered in the UK Government’s response to COVID-19. We are clear that consideration of equality impacts must be integral in all key policy decisions. All equality and discrimination laws and obligations continue to apply during the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p>We will publish the National Strategy for Disabled People taking into account the impacts of the pandemic on disabled people. Many of those earning below £118 per week are already in receipt of benefits. If they are on Universal Credit, their award will rise when their income falls. More generally Universal Credit and New Style Employment and Support Allowance exist to support people when they are unable to work because they are ill or isolating.</p><p> </p><p>We consulted last year on the idea of extending Statutory Sick Pay eligibility to those earning below the Lower Earnings Limit, as part of a wider package of measures intended to support people to remain in work and reduce ill-health related job loss. The rationale was about retaining a link between employer and employee. We received a good response from a range of stakeholders.
