star this property answer text We have applied no sanctions against London Midland in regard to performance on the Birmingham Cross City line; we do not disaggregate performance by the train operators to that level. In the autumn of 2012 London Midland experienced a high number of cancellations, largely due to issues with availability of train crew. As a result, they breached the terms of their Franchise Agreement, and a remedial plan and package of benefits was agreed with the Department. As the Secretary of State for Transport announced to the House on 20 December 2012, this package included passenger benefits of: 500,000 discounted tickets, free travel for season ticket holders (worth up to c.£5.4m), capital investment, and additional driver training investment worth a combined £6.25m more like this

The use of small unmanned aircraft of less than 20 kilograms is specifically covered by two articles within the Air Navigation Order, which legislate for the ‘general’ flying aspects and the flight of those equipped for surveillance. As well as these specific articles, a more general article which prevents a person ‘causing or permitting an aircraft to endanger the safety of any person or property’ also remains applicable.
more like this

The transport industry, local authorities, the police and others are already investing in, and undertaking, wide-ranging initiatives to improve the personal security of public transport passengers and staff and to keep our public transport systems as low crime environments.

However, the Government is not readily able to increase passenger services in commercial transport markets. For example, decisions about bus services outside London are largely a matter for the private sector. Equally, it is difficult to see that any such increase would have a positive effect on matters of personal security.

more like this

star this property answer text
We have not sought funding from any of the Public Health Responsibility Deal partners but a number of them do already support our drink drive campaign in other ways. Our aim is to develop partnerships with brands who can provide in-context solutions or ‘nudges’ to help drivers avoid alcohol if they are driving, or to help those people who are drinking get home safely without driving. These initiatives are all completely funded by the partner.

One example is Coca Cola, who for several years have run a designated driver campaign, rewarding designated drivers with a buy-one-get-one-free offer on coke drinks in thousands of venues during the festive season.

Last year we developed a new partnership with drinks company Diageo. They supported our campaign by using their Johnnie Walker ambassadors, Formula 1 drivers Jenson Button and Kevin Magnusson, to ask drivers to take a pledge to never drink and drive, in return for discounted taxi rides.

We also work closely with drinks company AB InBev. Their Budweiser Designated Driver campaign, promotes and celebrates the important role of designated driver.

We will continue to seek further partnerships with commercial brands who can extend the reach and impact of our campaigns.
