The Department for Transport remains committed to introducing mandatory disability awareness training for taxi and PHV drivers in England through new National Minimum Standards for licensing authorities when Parliamentary time allows. We continue to work through the normal government channels to identify a suitable legislative vehicle and sufficient Parliamentary time to take forward this important measure.

In the meantime, we will publish a consultation on updated best practice guidance for local licensing authorities in England later in the year, including a stronger recommendation that every driver is required to complete disability awareness training.

more like this

These services help to support levelling-up and provide a key avenue of Union connectivity.

As a result, the Department is investing £1.2 billion in a programme of infrastructure enhancements for the ECML. These upgrades are vital to improve the service on the railway for tens of thousands of passengers who travel on the route. Alongside the brand-new Azuma trains, this will help to deliver journey time, reliability and capacity improvements. These upgrades have already enabled direct LNER services from London King’s Cross to Middlesbrough to commence in December 2021.

The review of the future timetable is considering the implementation of additional services to Bradford, Middlesbrough, Cleethorpes and Huddersfield, as well as aiming to deliver more services and faster journey times to Leeds and Edinburgh, improving connectivity between London, Yorkshire, the North East and Scotland.

Additionally, following publication of the Integrated Rail Plan in November 2021, the Department will ask Network Rail to take forward interventions on the East Coast Main Line to deliver improved journeys to Leeds and the North East. This will consider upgrades to allow higher speeds, including up to 140mph on some sections, longer trains and measures to tackle bottlenecks that limit speed and capacity.

This will significantly increase the number of passengers who will be able to travel using contactless ticketing between national rail and TfL modes. Further integration of these systems with National Rail will be a matter for TfL and Great British Railways.

Last year’s spending review set aside £360 million investment to modernise industry ticketing and retailing systems. We also announced alongside the Integrated Rail Plan, an expansion of pay-as-you-go travel on rail to more than 700 stations in urban areas across the country including more than 400 in the north. This is in addition to our manifesto commitment to extend PAYG to more than 200 stations in the South East.
more like this

star this property answer text
Government supports the development of a network of Strategic Rail Freight Interchanges (SRFIs) and associated infrastructure. SRFIs are key to enabling the efficient transportation of goods around the country and reducing cost to customers. Such infrastructure also broadens the reach of the rail freight industry, allowing it to tap into new regions and markets, facilitating growth and importantly allowing the industry to be more competitive when compared to road haulage.

The policy position is set out in the National Networks’ National Policy Statement (NN-NPS) and more generally in the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). The NN-NPS does not specify where SRFIs should be located. Applications are considered on a case by case basis and the onus is therefore on private sector developers to bring forward proposals if they are deemed to be operationally and commercially viable.
more like this
