star this property answer text
The Secretary of State for International Development has not recently held any discussions with her Israeli counterparts on economic revitalisation in Gaza. The UK remains gravely concerned about the humanitarian and economic situation in Gaza. In August 2017, Minister Burt met with Israeli officials to discuss various issues including the dire need to improve the humanitarian and economic situation in Gaza. We welcome all practical steps to improve conditions as a matter of urgency. HMG officials regularly discuss economic revitalisation in Gaza with their Israeli and Palestinian counterparts. For example, on 13 March, senior HMG officials attended a United States hosted conference on the humanitarian and economic situation in Gaza alongside representatives from 20 countries, including Israel.
more like this

DFID and the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), which leads on our relationship with the World Health Organisation (WHO), work closely to promote the steps to achieve UHC internationally. At the 2018 World Health Assembly, the previous Secretary of State for Health and Social Care stressed the importance of universal access to basic healthcare. We supported the WHO’s thirteenth General Programme of Work and its strong focus on UHC. We are promoting UHC through international forums such as the G7 and G20 to ensure greater collective action is agreed at the 2019 UN High-Level Meeting on UHC.
more like this

star this property answer text
DFID has reviewed the report and welcomes its focus on long-term, systemic change which is central to DFID’s approach. Women and girls’ health and education are a top priority for DFID. At the UN General Assembly the Secretary of State announced £600 million in new funding for family planning supplies for women and girls in the world’s poorest countries. This week the UK announced a £515 million package of support for education. DFID is committed to generational transformation for the world’s poorest and already spends 57% of its bilateral budget on fragile and conflict affected states. The UK will host the Vaccine Alliance pledging conference next year to help create a healthier world. I welcome the report acknowledging DFID’s high standards of transparency and effectiveness. Other departments are making good progress and DFID continues to support.
more like this

The Prime Minister has publicly stated that education, particularly girls’ education, is a priority for the UK. He announced £90 million for education in emergencies and protracted crisis including £85 million to Education Cannot Wait at the G7 Summit, and last week the UK announced a £515 million package of support for education, including a £300 million pledge for the new International Finance Facility for Education. In total, these announcements will support 6.3 million girls. Alongside our commitment to the Global Partnership for Education, the UK is now the leading bilateral donor to all three major multilateral education funds and continues to be one of the leading bilateral donors to basic education. At the UN General Assembly last week, the UK has been calling for others to step up and follow our lead.
more like this

star this property answer text
If we are to meet the ambition of SDG 3 and ensure no-one is left behind, countries need to invest more public resources in health. The UK strongly supports the commitments in the United Nations Political Declaration on Universal Health Coverage. This calls on countries to increase public spending, with an emphasis on primary health care, noting World Health Organisation recommendations of an additional 1% of GDP or more. Evidence shows that the best way to achieve these financing increases is to secure political commitment rather than aid conditionality measures.
more like this

star this property answer text
The UK recognises the importance of providing affordable vaccines for the poorest nations. Through UK support to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the price of common childhood vaccines has reduced by 17% since 2016. Bringing down vaccine prices is part of a wider strategy in Gavi to increase access to vaccines and our significant investment supports global initiatives to increase vaccine transparency and help ensure their affordability.

Gavi helps secure the lowest price for vaccines for 68 of the world’s poorest countries. Gavi procures its vaccines through UNICEF, which makes public its historic, current and future prices for vaccines. For countries who are not eligible for Gavi-subsidised vaccines, the UK also advocates and supports its partners to make prices publicly available online. This helps establish benchmark prices so countries can negotiate better deals.

Outside of Gavi supported countries, the UK is supportive of the World Health Organisation’s Global Strategy and Plan of Action and Roadmap for Access to Medicines. These plans help increase global price transparency whist also encouraging innovation that is crucial for future vaccine development.
