star this property answer text
DFID provides significant support to protect children from violence around the world in both development and humanitarian contexts. Funding is delivered directly through child protection programming, as well as through wider education, nutrition, health, economic development and social protection programming. Current examples of support include providing £5 million to the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Children that is driving international progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 16.2 and on which the Secretary of State is a board member, £26 million to a Regional Programme in Asia targeting the worst forms of child labour and £29.7 million to Education Cannot Wait, a global fund for education in emergencies which has protection at its centre.

There are currently no codes or markers within the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) database that allow for the systematic identification and tracking of all spending on protecting children from violence. World Vision International is currently working with DFID, alongside other development partners, civil society and the DAC to explore whether a new process for identifying donor spend on violence against children can be agreed.

The Secretary of State has engaged regularly with the Director General of the World Health Organisation about the current outbreak in DRC and how the UK can provide support to the response. The current response is building on previous UK investments on preparedness and health systems; the experimental vaccine used in DRC was developed with UK support after the West Africa outbreak in 2014-15.

More broadly DFID is investing £40million over four years through the Tackling Deadly Diseases in Africa Programme (TDDAP) to support preparedness, detection and response work for diseases including Ebola in the countries most at risk. star this property answer text
We keep debt levels in sub-Saharan African countries under regular review along with other key macroeconomic indicators. Average debt levels in Sub-Saharan Africa have grown from 28% of GDP in 2010 to 48% in 2018 although this is still significantly lower than the 68% of GDP in 2000. As of 1st November 2018, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) classify 6 countries in sub-Saharan Africa as being in debt distress with a further 10 as being at “high risk of debt distress”. DFID remains concerned about rising debt levels in Africa and the UK continues to raise the need for action on this issue, both with international institutions such as the World Bank and IMF and international fora such as the G7 and G20. The relationship between debt and poverty reduction is complex. Every country is different, and we work closely with governments, the IMF, World Bank and other development partners to ensure the impact on poverty is factored into decisions relating to public finance.

Working with the governments of neighbouring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, our assistance is focused on the most vulnerable Syrian refugees in the region, including children, to meet their immediate needs and improve their lives until they can safely return to Syria.

Education is a key part of this work. We rely on regular assessment of education needs and learning outcomes, from implementing partners and UN agencies, in order to inform our decisions around our education response in the region. As a result, DFID funded partners in the region are providing educational activities, and child friendly spaces where children receive learning support and psychosocial care, both within refugee camps and in host communities. Overall, in 2017/18 alone, DFID’s support provided over 584,000 children in the region with access to quality education.
