Research shows that restricting access to abortion services does not make abortions less common – it only serves to make them less safe, risking women’s and girls’ health and lives through dangerous, backstreet abortions. At least 8% of maternal deaths worldwide are caused by unsafe abortions. Millions more women and girls are left with injuries and disabilities as a result.</p><p> </p><p>The UK’s position is that safe abortion reduces recourse to unsafe abortion and thus saves lives, and that women and adolescent girls must have the right to make their own decisions about their sexual and reproductive health and well-being. The worst affected provinces are Kandahar, Helmand, Herat and Farah. More than 40 people are known to have died, and hundreds of others have been injured or are missing. According to the Government, more than 7,100 houses have been damaged and over 5,600 destroyed across Afghanistan. More than 50,000 people require humanitarian assistance.</p><p> </p><p>At present, the Afghan Government are leading efforts to respond. International organisations are helping them to assess the situation on the ground and respond directly with food, non-food items, hygiene kits, winter clothes and emergency shelter (tents). DFID is closely monitoring what is happening and we stand ready to assist as and when our support is requested or required.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is at the forefront of the international humanitarian response in Afghanistan. As a result of UK funding, up to two million Afghans received lifesaving assistance in 2018, including hundreds of thousands of Afghans affected by one of the worst droughts the country has ever faced. This includes work that we cannot breakdown geographically such as our funding to the Global Environment Facility and our work on curbing illicit financial flows. We also invest substantial sums in tackling deforestation which helps to protect habitats for endangered species such as the Sumatran tiger and Asian elephant. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/10/2019 answer text <p>DFID supports victims of human trafficking in Africa through several programmes, as part of the UK Government’s commitment to realising Sustainable Development Goal 8.7, the eradication of all forms of modern slavery, forced labour and human trafficking by 2030. Current support totals over £30 million.</p><p> </p><p>In Nigeria, for example, we are providing rehabilitation and reintegration support to almost 1,000 victims of human trafficking and vulnerable migrants returned from Libya.</p><p> </p><p>In Somalia, Sudan and Ethiopia we are providing protection and rehabilitation services to more than 200,000 vulnerable children on the move, reducing their risk of exposure to trafficking.</p><p> </p><p>And we are working to end the worst forms of child labour in Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Ethiopia. This includes children forcibly recruited during armed conflicts, sexually abused, or exploited through other forms of forced labour or hazardous work. Through DFID and the Department of Health and Social Care, we fund the WHO Global Surveillance and Monitoring System, which helps countries to identify and report substandard and falsified products, including anti-malaria medication in Africa.</p><p> </p><p>DFID also funds the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria, which is committed to responsible and sustainable procurement and investigates any reported cases of substandard and falsified medicines through its Office of the Inspector General. We support countries to strengthen their health systems and work closely with partners to raise awareness on good distribution practices to minimise the risk of these medicines entering the supply chain. We welcome the successful adoption of the UN Security Council resolution on sexual violence in conflict, recognising the need for an integrated, effective, international approach to tackling such violence. The resolution adds to previous resolutions, for example highlighting the need to take a survivor-centred approach.</p><p> </p><p>However, the UK deeply regrets that language on services for survivors of sexual violence, recognising the acute need for those services to include comprehensive reproductive and sexual health services, including safe termination of pregnancy, did not meet with all Council members’ support and does not appear in the text. It is essential that we maintain the progress that we have made on this issue in previous Council resolutions. The UK will continue to champion, defend and support comprehensive sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for survivors of sexual violence and all women and girls around the world. Following the vote, several likeminded members states also expressed their disappointment at the watering down of the language on SRHR. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 08/10/2019 answer text <p>DFID responded immediately to help those affected by hurricane Dorian through the deployment of a team of humanitarian experts to The Bahamas. Working alongside the Bahamas Government’s National Emergency Management Association, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency and international partners, they helped assess the scale of needs, coordinate the emergency response and ensure aid quickly reached those affected.</p><p> </p><p>Through the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship Mounts Bay the UK were able to rapidly distribute emergency supplies, assist communities who were cut off, and clear debris to enable additional support to arrive. Mounts Bay has been in the Caribbean, loaded with relief supplies, since June to prepare for and provide life-saving emergency assistance in emergencies like Dorian.</p><p> </p><p>The UK committed up to £1.5 million towards the immediate humanitarian response. We address this through support to the Livelihoods and Food Security Fund (LIFT), to which the UK has provided £187 million since 2010. DFID undertook a slavery assessment across Burma in 2018. Around 128,000 internally displaced people remain in crowded camps in central Rakhine since 2012.
