star this property answer text <p>The Prosperity Fund, which is led and managed by the National Security Secretariat in Cabinet Office, is committed to meeting the government target of ‘good’ on the International Aid Transparency Index by 2020. The Fund is working closely with DFID policy and Transparency teams, benefiting from their experience and expertise and the International Aid Transparency Initiative to ensure it meets standards for transparency.</p><p>The Fund has already begun working towards this target, publishing its first Annual Review in 2017, alongside a data release on spend for 2016/17. The Fund was announced in the 2015 Strategic Defence and Security Review; no further allocations have been made beyond the initial £1.2bn allocated over the Fund’s six year lifetime. Work has continued since early 2017 to respond to the ICAI recommendations and to build a strategic portfolio that matches UK government priorities.</p><p>The Prosperity Fund published an Annual Report and financial data for 2016/17, and will continue to publish information, working to meet the government commitment of ‘good’ on the Aid Transparency Index by 2020.</p><p>All Prosperity Fund Official Development Assistance spend will comply with the International Development Act, and with the Gender Equality (2014) and the Official Development Assistance Target (2015).</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The UK is the largest donor to Gavi, the global vaccine alliance, which provides developing countries with pneumococcal vaccine to protect against the main cause of pneumonia. 109 million children were given this vaccine between 2010 and 2016, thanks to Gavi’s support, saving an estimated 762,000 lives.</p><p>DFID supports Gavi’s Pneumococcol Advanced Market commitment, an innovative funding mechanism that incentivises pharmaceutical companies to produce vaccines for the world’s poorest countries at an affordable cost. DFID also supports countries to build stronger health systems that can respond to existing disease burdens and emerging health issues, including pneumonia, and works to tackle malnutrition, a key risk factor for severe pneumonia.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Although famine has not been formally declared in 2018, South Sudan continues to experience record levels of food insecurity as a result of the ongoing conflict. 5.3 million people, nearly half the population, are estimated to be severely food insecure - a 40% increase from the same time last year. 1 million people are on the edge of famine.</p><p>To tackle food insecurity and prevent famine, UK Aid is working with partners like the World Food Programme (WFP) and the UN Humanitarian Air Service to get food and nutrition supplies to key locations across the country – by truck, helicopter or barge. With support from the UK and other international donors, so far this year WFP has reached almost 1.6 million people with a total of 18,000 metric tonnes of food. They are also continuing to preposition stocks at key locations across the country in anticipation of future need.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>DFID supports the Government’s Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict Initiative (PSVI) through our research programme, specific projects to address violence against women and girls, and through the UK’s Humanitarian Reform Policy.</p><p> </p><p>DFID’s flagship ‘What Works to Prevent Violence’ research programme focuses on addressing the root causes of violence against women and girls in conflict and humanitarian settings, including sexual violence. The focus of this research is on understanding how to stop violence before it starts, with evidence used across UK government programmes to prevent and respond to sexual violence in conflict.</p><p> </p><p>DFID country offices are at the forefront of support to help reduce and mitigate gender based violence, including sexual violence in fragile and conflict affected states.</p><p> </p><p>At the World Humanitarian Summit (2016) the UK pushed forward the implementation of global commitments to protect women and girls in emergencies to deliver specific measures to reduce their vulnerability to violence and exploitation. For example, agreeing the application by partner agencies of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee (IASC) gender based violence in emergency guidelines.</p>

star this property answer text <p>Following a diphtheria outbreak in the Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh the UK Emergency Medical Team (EMT) was deployed for six weeks from late December 2017 to early February 2018.</p><p> </p><p>A 40 strong team of medical professionals, including doctors, nurses and paramedics helped more than 3,000 Rohingya. Almost 500 people were treated for diphtheria and if not for British help, many could have died. DFID also provided £2 million to vaccinate children against diphtheria.</p><p> </p><p>With the outbreak now under control, UK teams have built capacity and handed over to local Bangladeshi health professionals to complete the diphtheria response.</p> more like this

This will include an assessment of codes of conduct, how organisations identify and respond to incidents, and how risk management places safeguarding and beneficiaries at its core. DFID is leading the way in supporting a range of organisations providing specialised help to survivors of sexual violence. The Government remains committed to supporting Nigeria to respond to humanitarian needs, and address the root causes of the conflict in the north-east of the country. Education is a crucial part of working towards a brighter future for the region.</p><p> </p><p>The UK and Nigeria have both endorsed the Safe Schools Declaration, which deters the military from use of schools and prevents schools becoming targets in conflict-affected areas. DFID is supporting the Government of Nigeria to implement the Declaration, including in the north-east.</p><p> </p><p>DFID supported the Safe School Initiative. Technical assistance provided has focused on supporting the Safe School Initiative secretariat through development of tools for reporting and monitoring of activities including training to school based management committees.</p> more like this
