Between 2009 and 2018, the Government spent £7.08 billion bilaterally from the public purse to support the fulfilment of the UN sustainable development goal on education. This does not include all multilateral spend. Between 2015 and 2019 DFID supported 14.8 million children to gain a decent education, of which at least 5.8 million were girls. UKAid is spent in the countries that need it the most. From 2015 to 2018, the largest number of children supported by DFID education programmes was in Africa, where the majority of out of school children live. This represented 3.6% of DFID’s workforce and 21% of the overall sickness absence for the department during this period. The estimated cost to DFID due to sickness absence during the period 1 May 2018 to 30 April 2019 was £217,350.</p><p> </p><p>DFID is committed to the health and wellbeing of all our staff, including helping them to manage stress in the workplace. DFID offers a range of guidance and services in place to support staff, including our Employee Assistance Programme (EAP), which offers telephone and face to face counselling for all staff. This service also provides a wide range of online information and advice on work/life issues. DFID’s HR teams and Occupational Health Services provide support and advice for staff and managers to ensure a successful return to work after a period of mental ill health. DFID is working closely with other government departments to facilitate the return of staff deployed to other government departments, following the extension of Article 50. As of 21 May 2019, 100 of these staff have returned.</p><p> </p><p>To release staff for deployment, DFID undertook a detailed prioritisation exercise to assess the internal resource required to maintain essential delivery. For DFID, this meant meeting the legal commitment to spend 0.7% of GNI (Gross National Income) on international development in an effective and value for money way and the ability to respond to humanitarian emergencies. CDC publishes the amounts it invests directly into businesses and investment funds. Individual investment valuations are commercially sensitive and are not disclosed.</p><p> </p><p>In the first two years of CDC’s current strategic period (2017-2018) it committed over $500 million to renewable energy.</p><p> </p><p>Since 2015, CDC has made over $800m of commitments in green investments in a range of sectors – including renewable power, green buildings and forestry. Over the past two years, CDC has committed over $500 million to renewable energy projects, almost 25% of CDC’s total investment commitments made over this period. Building on this base, CDC have recently completed work on a new Climate Strategy that sets out a higher level of ambition on Climate and a portfolio-wide “Carbon budget” approach to Paris alignment, tied to HMG commitments to reach net zero by 2050. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/05/2019 answer text <p><strong></strong></p><p>The UK is committed to meeting the needs of all internally displaced persons, whether they are displaced as a result of conflict or natural disasters. <em> </em>DFID provides funding to key agencies involved in responding to the needs of internally displaced persons, including the Office for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).</p><p> </p><p>The UK is a significant humanitarian donor in many countries with displaced populations. For example in South Sudan, in 2017/18 our support reached over 420,000 people with food assistance, over 370,000 women and children with nutrition support, and over 680,000 people with access to safe drinking water and/or improved sanitation facilities, many of whom are internally displaced. In Iraq, DFID support has helped provide food assistance to over 408,000 people, emergency cash transfers to over 274,000 people, and life-saving healthcare services to over 4.1m people, including those internally displaced. Additionally, in Syria where there are over 6 million of internally displaced persons, DFID has spent over £1 billion in humanitarian response.</p><p> </p><p>The UK has provided £36 million in response to Cyclone Idai which is estimated to have affected 2.6 million people in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The study also describes the Rohingya people’s immediate concerns affecting their quality of life, including shelter conditions, lack of firewood or stoves, issues with healthcare, water, sanitation and hygiene and protection support, inadequate food and insufficient supplies.</p><p> </p><p>The UK has committed £256 million in funding since August 2017 to improve many aspects of daily life including food security, nutrition, shelter, health, and education. The UK engages regularly with the Government of Bangladesh to discuss the need to improve refugees’ access to education, skills and livelihoods. While progress has been made, life within the camps remains challenging for the Rohingya and the uncertainty about their future is a difficult burden to bear. For example, the act of infant and child feeding needs good personal hygiene – hand washing with soap and water, and good food hygiene. Since 2015, DFID has helped over 51 million poor people in Africa and Asia get access to a drinking water supply or toilet for the first time.</p><p> </p><p>DFID also supports programmes where water supplies are developed for multiple uses, which include nutrition objectives. More than 20 million people in Yemen do not have reliable access to food and almost 10 million people face extreme food shortages.</p><p>We are concerned that the outbreak of COVID-19 in Yemen is already exacerbating this devastating humanitarian situation.</p><p>DFID modelling estimates that over 100,000 Yemenis are now likely to have been infected by COVID-19. With only half of Yemen’s health facilities currently functional, we are extremely concerned by the capacity of the Yemen’s healthcare system to respond.</p><p>Ultimately, a political settlement is the only way to properly address the worsening humanitarian crisis. Heavy rains in the region have provided conditions conducive to the unprecedented locust outbreaks, which will affect the food security situation even further. The UK is supporting the Food and Agriculture Organisation’s (FAO) emergency appeal to help to control the increase of locusts across East Africa, as well as reduce the risk of swarms spreading into the Sahel.</p><p>The humanitarian situation will be exacerbated by the impact of COVID-19. The UK is the second-largest donor to the malnutrition response in Yemen and we continue to encourage other donors to provide significant funding to Yemen, including for the malnutrition response.</p><p>In Syria, last financial year (19/20), the UK reached over 170,000 children under five, or pregnant or new mothers, with nutrition interventions. The UK is one of the largest bilateral donors to the Syria Crisis since it began in 2011.
