unstar this property answer text <p>The UK is providing a range of support to displaced people in Yemen in response to the displacement of 3.3 million people since the conflict began in 2015. Last financial year (2018/19), for example, we <del class="ministerial">provided</del> <ins class="ministerial">contributed to the provision of </ins>food assistance to over 490,000 internally displaced people (IDPs) and since June 2017 we have helped over 40,000 IDPs receive psychosocial support and provided over 35,000 with life-saving health care.</p><p> </p><p>The UK has also supported the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to provide primary healthcare and mental health services, legal assistance, child protection and support to survivors of gender-based violence. We are supporting IOM and UNHCR with £9 million this financial year (2019/20) to allow them to continue providing these vital services.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>There are currently <del class="ministerial">no</del> <ins class="ministerial">two </ins>known cases of COVID-19 in Gaza. The World Health Organisation (WHO) has delivered essential equipment such as lab testing kits and personal protective equipment and has used DFID-funded Trauma Stabilisation Tents to quarantine suspected COVID-19 patients at the Rafah border crossing. UN agencies are supporting further measures such as the establishment of a field hospital and the creation of a medical checkpoint at the Erez border crossing.</p><p>A widespread outbreak of the virus could overwhelm Gaza’s already overburdened health system - especially given the lack of reliable access to clean water and energy in the strip. We continue to monitor the situation and are working closely with the UN and the international community to ensure agencies are ready to respond to an outbreak.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The UK is a long-term supporter of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA). Our funding helps provide education to more than 533,000 children (half of which are girls), health services for around 3.1 million Palestinian refugees, and social safety net assistance for around <del class="ministerial">271,000</del> <ins class="ministerial">255,000 </ins>of the most vulnerable.</p><p>The services that UNRWA provide play a key role in helping contain and address the spread of COVID-19. We continue to monitor the situation closely and are working closely with UNRWA and the international community to ensure a co-ordinated response to the outbreak.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The ‘Delivering Sustainable and Equitable Increases in Family Planning in Kenya’ programme will take an integrated approach to sexual and reproductive health and rights in order to meet a wide range of women’s reproductive health needs. Because these services are to be integrated, it is not possible to disaggregate figures solely relating to safe abortion procedures. Over the life of the programme, it is expected to reach 322,000 additional users and it will provide 2.3 million Couple Years of Protection (CYP) and avert 2,221 maternal deaths.</p><p>The aim of DFID’s work on sexual and reproductive health and rights is to reduce the number of unwanted pregnancies and unsafe abortions, increase the use of voluntary family planning, and give women control over their own bodies and lives.</p> more like this

We are concerned by the high levels of poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity, as well as the fragile health system, shrinking Gazan economy and the lack of access to consistent supplies of electricity.</p><p> </p><p>DFID recently announced an aid package of £2 million to the International Committee for the Red Cross to support delivery of medicines, equipment and rehabilitation services. The UK’s new economic development programme aims to help the economy in Gaza and the West Bank by increasing trade and creating jobs. The UK has also made a commitment to UNRWA of up to £80m over the next two years to help provide health services and education to Palestinian refugees living across the Middle East. The UK is committed to alleviating the humanitarian situation in the OPTs and continues to urge the parties to prioritise progress towards reaching a durable solution.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The Withdrawal Agreement ensures that UK based organisations will be able to bid for funding, participate in and lead consortia and otherwise implement as normal EU development programmes that are approved before December 2020 until they complete. Furthermore, we are clear that any future UK financial contribution to the EU would require eligibility for UK entities to bid for and implement programmes where the UK funds. We regularly consult NGOs regarding their concerns to ensure we can support our world-class development sector. I therefore urge the Hon. unstar this property answer text <p>The IMF estimates that Yemen’s economy has contracted by around 50% since the conflict began in 2015, with GDP per capita down from $1,570 in 2014 to $873 in 2018.</p><p> </p><p>Both the formal and informal economies have collapsed as a result of conflict lines preventing the movements of goods and people, infrastructure damage including to factories and roads, lack of electricity and clean water and a population beset by lack of food and disease.</p><p> </p><p>We are not aware of any data this year on the loss of economic activity as a result of aerial bombing.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>The UK continues to encourage the Government of Yemen to reduce the risk of inflation by not printing new money and has worked with the Central Bank of Yemen to release over $500 million of hard currency, provided by Saudi Arabia, to support importers bringing in food staples. Although the Riyal has since stabilised, the price of food and other basic goods remains high.</p><p> </p><p>We will continue to work with the Government of Yemen and international partners to consider how we can continue to have a good level of imports of food, fuel and medicine into Yemen which helps to alleviate pressure on prices.</p> more like this
