	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/11/2018 answer text <p>The UK government continues to raise concerns with the Saudi led-Coalition about the potential impact of any assault on the port and city of Hodeidah and is in regular contact with the Coalition about the need to ensure that any further military operations do not disrupt commercial and humanitarian flows both through the port and onwards across the country. This is done both by offering businesses technical assistance and access to finance for investments, and by working to remove inefficiencies in agri-food value chains. Alongside this, DFID funds research and development of nutritious crops and agricultural technologies and supports their commercial scale-up. DFID also works to strengthen the enabling environment to make it more conducive for companies to invest in nutritious foods and associated inputs, technologies and services.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, DFID supports accountability mechanisms like the Access to Nutrition Index and the Scaling Up Nutrition Civil Society Network to further incentivise more responsible business action on nutrition. As the situation has deteriorated, over three million Venezuelans have fled to neighbouring countries.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>We will be providing a package of £6.5 million in aid to respond to the most severe health and nutrition needs in Venezuela and the region. DFID staff have been deployed in the region since last year and this package builds on our core support to the UN and Red Cross, operating since the early stages of the crisis. To date, the UK has pledged £2.81 billion, including £1.03 billion for humanitarian support inside Syria. UK aid is providing life-saving support to millions of displaced civilians, including those in acute need across northern Syria and in Rukban camp.</p><p> </p><p>In financial year 2018/19, DFID has allocated over £40 million for Northeast Syria. We will also expect to provide approximately £87 million for activities in Northwest Syria. Our support in Idlib governorate alone has meant that approximately 572,000 people were provided with access to safe water and 500,000 people received medical consultations between January and June 2018.</p><p> </p><p>Between December 2016 and November 2018, DFID provided £4.14 million for essential humanitarian assistance, including water and health services, to those in acute need in Rukban camp. Bilateral Official Development Assistance is allocated based on considerations of need, i.e. levels of poverty, ability of countries to fund themselves and whether DFID can add value. The 2016 bilateral and multilateral development reviews set out our approach to allocations in more detail. So far, DFID has spent over £1.2 billion to support over 5.6 million refugees in the region. For 2019, we have pledged to provide at least £300 million to alleviate the extreme suffering in Syria and neighbouring countries.</p><p> </p><p>Our assistance is focused on the most vulnerable Syrian refugees in the region to meet their immediate needs and improve their lives until they can safely return to Syria. For most of this year imports have been robust and in some cases exceeded pre-war levels. We are however concerned about recent reports of a reduction of imports into Yemen.</p><p><em> </em></p><p>To maintain confidence of commercial importers, the UK recently worked with the US, Saudis and Emiratis to agree measures with the Central Bank of Yemen to issue letters of credit to provide foreign currency so that importers can purchase food on international markets. This has also resulted in an appreciation of the Yemeni Riyal, increasing the purchasing power of ordinary Yemenis.</p><p> </p><p>It is imperative the Red Sea ports of Hodeidah and Saleef remain operational. Yemen relies on imports to meet 90% of its basic needs like food and fuel – before the conflict, the Red Sea ports of Hodeidah and Saleef accounted for approximately 80% of total imports into Yemen.
