DFID is a leading supporter of the effort to meet the World Health Organisation (WHO) 2020 targets, including a 40% reduction in malaria cases and deaths. We are the second largest donor, contributing 16% of the global spend on malaria control and elimination, with the rest coming from other donors, governments of endemic countries, and the private sector. Funding assessments are conducted by WHO. DFID quickly responded to the crises, announcing £100m of life-saving emergency assistance for South Sudan and £110m for Somalia. UK food assistance will directly reach 1.5 million people across the two countries. The UK Government has also provided £10m in aid-match funding to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s East Africa Crisis Appeal to encourage the public to donate. By matching public donations pound for pound, the Government is boosting the difference Britons can make. The case was discussed with Ethiopian counterparts during the visits of both the Secretary of State and the Foreign Secretary to Ethiopia earlier this year.
