Mains-fed water filter units, serving chilled tap water, are installed throughout the UK offices for the use of both staff and visitors. The FCO now manage our overseas offices and are responsible for the provision of supplies, such as bottled water. DFID’s usage will be included in their response for the overall overseas estate to this question. In many countries the mains water is not drinkable and bottled water is provided. However, we do not keep any records of purchases or amounts spent; these are held by the FCO.
more like this

Supporting Sierra Leones’ elections bodies to deliver free, fair and inclusive elections is a top priority for the UK. We are working with the National Elections Commission (NEC) and Civil Society Organizations to deliver civic and voter information better targeted to specific groups like women and persons with a disability. Efforts are underway by the UN in country to establish a women’s situation room to help monitor and tackle instances of violence against women and other vulnerable groups. The NEC is also working to make voting centres more physically accessible and/or able to provide special voting arrangements e.g. tactile ballots for the visually impaired, and table-top voting screens for mothers with small children.

Made from plant material – not plastic – these cups are organic, compostable and can be recycled with the food waste. In 2017 DFID Scotland took delivery of approximately 3,000 card and plastic cups. There are schemes in both DFID offices to encourage use of reusable coffee cups, with 10% off the price of a coffee when staff use their own cup. In DFID Scotland reusable cups are available for purchase, with the aim of bringing down the number of disposable coffee cups used.
more like this

This week, the government of Ethiopia launched a humanitarian appeal which sets out that 7.9 million people are in need of emergency assistance to meet their basic food needs in 2018. This is on top of the 7.9 million people who are food insecure from year to year and are supported by the government of Ethiopia’s Productive Safety Net Programme (PSNP).

Responding to food insecurity is a top priority for the UK in Ethiopia and our work is making a real difference. DFID is currently assisting 4 million people in Ethiopia to meet their emergency food needs. Through the PSNP, we are also providing food and cash transfers to 840,000 people, building their food security. We will continue to closely monitor the level of food security in Ethiopia.
more like this
