star this property answer text
Syria’s neighbours have been generous in welcoming huge numbers of refugees, but tighter border restrictions are making it increasingly difficult for people to leave Syria. We hold regular discussions with host governments on this issue, and support UN refugee agencies UNHCR and UNRWA in their advocacy. There are over 3.9 million Syrian refugees in the region, including over 1.7 million in Turkey, over 1.1 million in Lebanon, and over 629,000 in Jordan. There are also 560,000 Palestinian refugees registered in Syria and thousands more in neighbouring countries, including many who have fled Syria. Whilst addressing the immediate needs of refugees and vulnerable members of host communities, UK aid is also supporting their longer term resilience and stability through funding to Lebanese and Jordanian municipalities for the running of essential public services, such as education.
more like this

We continue to call on all sides to the conflict to ensure free, unimpeded access for neutral and impartial humanitarian agencies to provide vital assistance to those in need. We worked hard to mobilise funding from other donors ahead of the third Kuwait Pledging Conference in March, which raised $3.6 billion, and we work alongside the UN to maintain momentum on fundraising longer-term. Our approach to addressing the impact of HIV on women and girls and the barriers to accessing information on sexual and reproductive healthcare is set out in the UK Government's 2011 HIV Position Paper and the recent review, “Towards Zero Infections-Two Years On”published in November 2013. For example, we are supporting the generation of new evidence to improve outcomes for women and girls, including supporting the development of female initiated HIV prevention technologies, research into how gender inequality drives epidemics and a particular focus on improving what works for adolescent girls in Southern Africa in accessing reproductive health needs.

more like this

The Foreign Secretary's Preventing Sexual Violence Initiative aims to combat the use of rape as a weapon of war, to end the culture of impunity that exists for these crimes, to increase the number of perpetrators brought to account, and to provide support to survivors. We welcome Bangladesh's endorsement in May of the Declaration of Commitment to End Sexual Violence in Conflict and their attendance at the Global Summit in June. The Declaration expresses a shared commitment and determination to see an end to the use of rape and sexual violence as weapons of war. Further information on centrally-managed UK aid spending delivered through multilaterals operating in Pakistan is available at: www.gov.uk/government/publications/statistics-on-international-development-2013.

For 2014-2015 DFID Pakistan has been allocated £310 million. star this property answer text
The crisis in the Central African Republic (CAR) has highlighted the importance of the cross-government approach set out in the Building Stability Overseas Strategy (BSOS), including rapid response, upstream prevention, and working in partnership with others in the international system. BSOS remains a core strategy for HMG's work in fragile and conflict-affected states.

In alignment with this, the UK continues to support international efforts to restore peace and security to CAR, some of which is funded by the Conflict Pool's Early Action Facility, which was created to support BSOS. We have provided logistical support to the French Operation Sangaris and £2m in non-lethal support to the African-led International Support Mission to the CAR (MISCA). The UK has committed £23m in humanitarian support to CAR since July 2013, funding a range of NGOs and UN agencies to provide access to protection, food, water, shelter, health and sanitation.

more like this

We provide long term, predictable support to UNRWA's General Fund, around 33% of which is spent in Gaza. Our support to the UN Access Coordination Unit helps 24 UN agencies and 90 INGOs get aid and goods into Gaza. Through our programme we are also helping to develop the Palestinian private sector. Movement and access restrictions prevent sustainable recovery of the Palestinian economy, so we continue to press the Government of Israel to ease those restrictions and allow the export of goods from Gaza to Israel and transfers to the West Bank.

more like this

In addition, DFID is finalizing arrangements to send out three Public Health England disease control specialists to Sierra Leone to support the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) response.

In Sierra Leone, DFID funds are being used to support improved coordination at the national level; training and equipping of health workers competently to manage Ebola cases; improving EVD case detection and supporting appropriate radio messaging and community mobilisation activities on EVD prevention in affected districts. In Liberia, DFID has provided chlorine and other materials for hygiene and sanitising; and training in their appropriate use. Along with colleagues in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, we are closely monitoring the outbreak from Sierra Leone and Liberia (where we have DFID country offices) and internationally through Whitehall. We are working with WHO and national government agencies to improve our understanding of the outbreak and help to guide the response in-country and regionally.
