Between 2011 and 2015 DFID supported over 11 million children into primary and lower secondary school (7.5 million children in countries considered fragile), and training 380,000 teachers through our multilateral partners. In 2015, the UK again committed to support a further 11 million children in the poorest countries to gain a decent education by 2020.

DFID is also supporting up to one million of the world’s poorest girls through DFID’s Girls Education Challenge (GEC). In July, DFID co-hosted the first, hugely successful Girls’ Education Forum in London and announced a further £100 million through the GEC to continue this support and help an additional 175,000 of the poorest, most marginalised adolescent girls in the world to get a decent education.
more like this

star this property answer text
The UK Government is already playing a leading role in improving energy access in developing countries through decentralised renewable energy. DFID has a range of programmes which are working with developing countries to ensure renewable energy markets work effectively as well as supporting energy businesses to grow, and providing consumers with access to funding to buy solar goods.

DFID’s Energy Africa campaign is one way that we are helping increase access to energy. Energy Africa aims to accelerate the expansion of the household solar market in Africa, and is about making the market work for the poor. It helps remove the barriers to household solar market expansion, including policy and regulatory obstacles, and supports businesses to innovate in energy services and technologies. DFID also supports numerous other initiatives to increase people’s access to energy through decentralised renewable energy. For example, the Renewable Energy and Adaptation to Climate Technologies (REACT) Challenge Fund has supported businesses in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda to provide clean energy for households, communities and businesses.

star this property answer text
HIV affects girls and women disproportionately, and a world without AIDS depends on a world where a girl’s rights and opportunities are protected. Until countries can work together to strengthen the sexual and reproductive rights of girls and women and deliver the services they need we will never achieve greater gender equality or end the AIDS epidemic.

AIDS is the leading cause of death for women of reproductive age - with an estimated 330,000 AIDS related deaths in sub-Saharan Africa in 2015 alone. This is why universal sexual and reproductive health and rights is a central pillar of DFID’s Strategic Vision. As a leading champion of sexual reproductive health and rights DFID takes the broadest possible definition which supports the integration of HIV with family planning and other SRHR services.

With UK support, gender equality is now a major pillar of the Global Fund’s Strategic Framework. The Global Fund invests an estimated 55-60% of its resources in programmes and services that reach women and children. DFID is also supporting the generation of new evidence to improve outcomes for women and girls, including supporting the development of female initiated HIV prevention technologies.
