star this property answer text
The UK is currently the largest donor to the Cyclone Idai response, providing £22 million of UK aid, £4 million of which is to match the UK public’s generous contributions to the Disasters Emergency Committee’s appeal. This is being used to deliver life-saving relief: tents and thousands of shelter kits are being distributed to those who have lost everything. UK aid is supporting the World Food Programme to feed 400,000 people in Mozambique, and cash transfers for food purchases in Malawi. In Zimbabwe, we are providing essential health, hygiene and child protection support. We continue to monitor the situation very closely, and the UK stands ready to provide further support if needed.
more like this

Our £25million What Works to Prevent Violence programme is the largest global investment in research into prevention of violence against women and girls. The Department for International Development is committed to maintaining the UK’s global leadership in this area. Work to prevent violence against women and girls in DFID consists of standalone prevention programming, integrated violence prevention and response programmes, and a wide range of interventions incorporated into wider education, women’s economic empowerment and social protection programmes. This complexity means that we do not specifically track all this spend as gender-based violence prevention.

more like this

Last month, DFID announced new funding to the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) to deliver urgently needed surgical equipment, medicines, wound dressing kits, prosthetic limbs and post-surgery physiotherapy. It will also help to provide physical rehabilitation services for up to 3,000 disabled people. The UK continues to urge the parties to prioritise progress towards reaching a durable solution for Gaza and to take the necessary steps to ensure Gaza’s reconstruction and economic recovery. Restrictions in Gaza were most recently raised with the PA in January 2019 by a UK Government official.
more like this

The UK did support the national census in 2017. The full results will be published by November and will provide household level data on some key development indicators. The UK has been tracking various analyses of the economic situation led by others (including the World Bank and the IMF) to understand the implications of the macro-economic on poverty levels and has advocated strongly for the Government to protect pro-poor social sector spending.
more like this

star this property answer text
The UKs pledge of £225 million over three years compares to the £210 million we spent over the previous four year period. Our annual contribution to the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) will increase by almost 50% to £75 million per year. We are the largest bilateral funder. The funding will be used to keep 850,000 children in school each year and train 170,000 teachers. This significant increase in funding reflects the results that GPE has achieved to date and our continued strong commitment to this mechanism.

Our support for GPE goes beyond funding. We will continue to play an active role on the GPE board and we are committed to further increasing our engagement in developing countries to drive improvements in GPE’s delivery.

Our pledge was less than that of the International Development Committee’s recommendation for three reasons. Whilst we are proud to remain GPE’s largest bilateral funder, it is important that other donors also pay their fair share. Secondly, GPE has made significant progress over the last replenishment period, but can continue to improve and demonstrate results. In particular, there is scope for GPE to drive greater improvements in teaching, deliver more for marginalised groups, and strengthen its country model to focus more robustly on quality and learning. Finally, we also invest significantly in other education programmes, and want to maintain a balanced portfolio across bilateral and multilateral spending.

star this property answer text
UK aid aims to achieve the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and the Government’s objectives as set out in the 2015 UK Aid Strategy. This is firmly in the UK’s national interest. As such, the UK focuses most of its aid spending on countries with the highest need; in low-income, fragile, and conflict-affected regions. However, in some middle-income countries there are still enduring high levels of poverty. These countries may no longer need grant aid in the form that we have previously provided, but may require assistance in other ways, such as technical expertise or help raising their own revenue to reduce poverty. This assistance may continue after a country has reached middle-income status and its economy modernises. The 2016 bilateral and multilateral development reviews set out our approach to allocations in more detail. As the Secretary of State has made clear, DFID will not just spend aid well, but will ensure that it could not be spent better.
more like this
