DFID is not providing support to the Sri Lankan government - DFID’s bilateral programme in Sri Lanka closed in 2006 when the country graduated to middle income status. In 2016 (most recent figures), the UK’s attributed share of core multilateral funding to Sri Lanka was £30.417m, primarily through the World Bank. This includes £8.3 million of the FCO’s Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF) programme focused on post-conflict community reconciliation and the Global Mine Action Programme which helps to build peace and support development in countries affected by landmines.
more like this

star this property answer text
The Secretary of State recently returned from Sierra Leone and saw first-hand that although the Ebola crisis has ended, the country faces major development challenges, including some of the worst child and infant mortality rates in the world.

Ebola has made these challenges worse and reversed, for example, much of the progress in health made since the civil war, with high numbers of health staff dying and sharp falls in essential services, such as treatment of malaria and immunisation. UK support is helping the Government of Sierra Leone to build up better health services and save lives, ensure children get a better education, increase access to water and sanitation, and lay the groundwork for increased economic development.

Our cross-government response to the 2014/15 Ebola crisis saved lives and stopped the outbreak decimating development in Sierra Leone. Halting the disease in West Africa was the single most important way of preventing Ebola from infecting people in the UK.

This work is in partnership with mandated protection agencies, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, and UNICEF, as well as non-governmental organisations.

DFID aims to improve learning outcomes, to reach all children in fragile states, and to keep girls in school. DFID supports children overseas to go to school and continue learning even when they are forced from their homes and this includes our flagship £355 million Girls’ Education Challenge that will enable up to 1 million more of the world’s most marginalised girls to benefit from an education of sufficient quality and transform their lives. In addition, DFID is supporting improvements to how the international community provides education in emergencies, including support for the ‘No Lost Generation’ Initiative to provide over 251,000 Syrian children with formal and informal education inside Syria and in the region, allowing them to catch up on lost learning time and sit public school examinations.

Education and protection will be key themes of the Syria Conference co-hosted by the UK in early February and the protection and education of children affected by natural disasters and conflicts will be addressed at the World Humanitarian Summit in May 2016.
