star this property answer text <p>Defra uses both monitoring and modelling to assess air quality in the UK. Measurement data is updated hourly on our website at:</p><p><a href="http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk" target="_blank">http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk</a> for the 142 automatic monitoring sites across the UK.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>While Defra does not monitor air pollution in central and eastern Europe, the UK air quality forecast provided by the Met Office takes account of European emissions and forecast weather conditions.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Defra also operates a network that measures particle numbers, size and composition, providing additional information about sources of particulate pollution. star this property answer text <p>Planning policy is a matter for the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government. The National Planning Policy Framework was developed by CLG in conjunction with Defra and other relevant parties and sets out how air quality needs to be taken into account in planning decisions. We advise local authorities in local air quality management guidance to carry out planning and air quality functions in close cooperation to control the impacts developments might have on air quality.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Commission has started infraction proceedings against the UK for not achieving European limit values for NO<sub>2</sub>. This case is ongoing. We are working in partnership with local authorities to ensure resources are invested in improving air quality to protect public health and the environment and to avoid any prospect of fines. We are already taking steps to tackle poor air quality and have committed £2 billion since 2011 to reduce emissions from transport. Defra publishes an annual report series, “Air Pollution in the UK”, that details assessments made of pollutants against EU directives and UK legislation. The UK is split into 43 areas comprising 15 non-agglomeration zones (regions) and 28 agglomeration zones (urban areas). Agglomeration zones correspond to urban centres above a population of 250,000.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The latest “Air Pollution in the UK report: 2013” is available to view at:<em> <a href="http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/library/annualreport/viewonline?year=2013_issue_1" target="_blank">http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk/library/annualreport/viewonline?year=2013_issue_1</a></em></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Long term trends of emissions and measured values are presented.
