The first year is school-based initial teacher training (ITT) where trainees teach a reduced hours timetable; the second year is teaching as a newly-qualified teacher (NQT). Its focus is on bringing into teaching high-quality graduates who are trained to make an impact on children’s attainment over the two-year duration of the scheme.</p><p> </p><p>In the 2014 cohort, 1,387 trainees started Summer Institute training. The Department does not routinely collect data on the number of anticipated closures but expects local authorities to fulfil their duties under the Childcare Act 2006 to ensure sufficient children’s centres to meet the needs of local families. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 31/12/2014 answer text <p>The Department for Education does not have a fixed estimate of the number of unregistered schools in England or the areas in which they are primarily located. The number of institutions that the Department is aware of and working with fluctuates on a continual basis as they open, close or become registered.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In the last three years the Department has asked 33 unregistered schools to register. There were 9 requests in 2012; 16 in 2013 and 8 in 2014.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>It is a criminal offence to operate an unregistered school. Where a school refuses to register, the Department works with the police and Ofsted to pursue a prosecution. It is a three-year campaign to ensure the UK has the maths and science skills it needs to succeed in a competitive global economy.</p><p>A 2014 CBI/Pearson report found that STEM skills are in widespread demand and nearly two in five firms that need employees with STEM skills and knowledge currently have difficulties recruiting staff.</p><p>It is essential that students leave school as fully-rounded individuals, with experience of a broad and balanced curriculum to prepare them for life in modern Britain. Our analysis shows that the gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers is narrowing.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>We are also investing £5 million to help schools ensure that pupils develop character attributes, such as resilience and grit, which underpin success in education and employment.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Education plays a vital role in giving all young people the opportunities they deserve. We have announced a number of new initiatives that will help achieve equality of opportunity in the UK.</p><br /><p>On 25<sup>th</sup> October, the Prime Minister and the Minister for Women and Equalities announced new measures to eradicate gender pay inequality. The government now requires larger employers to publish information about their bonuses for men and women. We are also extending our plans for gender pay gap reporting to the public sector.</p><br /><p>On 26<sup>th</sup> October, the Prime Minister launched a public and private sector initiative to tackle discrimination in recruitment. A number of organisations, including KPMG, HSBC and Deloitte, together with the Civil Service and local government, have committed to using name-blind applications for all graduate and apprenticeship level roles.</p><br /><p>In addition, on 22<sup>nd</sup> October, the Home Secretary published diversity profiles on all police forces in England and Wales. These profiles showed that no force had a black and minority ethnic (BME) contingent equivalent to that of the local demographic.
