answer text
There has been a reduction in the number of Eritrean nationals seeking asylum in the UK. Between January-September 2016, the number was 796, a 68% decline in applications compared with the same period in 2015 when the figure was 2807. There has also been a fall of about 50% in the number of Eritreans arriving in Italy.

Tackling illegal migration to the EU from the Horn of Africa is a priority. The UK is engaging on this bilaterally, and in collaboration with international partners within the frameworks of the Khartoum Process and the EU Trust Fund. In addition, the UK is working to address the underlying causes of migration from Eritrea, including by supporting projects to promote professional development and employment opportunities to young Eritreans, and a programme to enhance judicial capacity and promote the rule of law.

Within Eritrea, only four traditional religious organisations (Orthodox Christian, Sunni Muslim, Catholic, and the Lutheran Evangelical Church of Eritrea) have official approval to operate. We are aware of reports that a number of individuals from non-sanctioned religions remain in detention, including 54 Jehovah's Witnesses, although reliable information is very difficult to obtain. Details of their detention have not been publicly released by the Eritrean government. Our Ambassador and EU counterparts have called for the release of all prisoners detained for religious beliefs or, as a minimum, that they are brought before a court for public hearing and fair trial, allowing them to defend themselves against any charge. We continue to press the government of Eritrea for specific details of their detention and health status.

answer text
My statement announced publication of guidance on Overseas Security and Justice Assistance precisely because this Government is determined never to provide assistance in a way which ignores, condones or enables torture. The guidance requires those managing any Government security or justice assistance to identify risks that their work may, even inadvertently, cause or encourage torture. Where any such risks are found to exist, they must first be mitigated and then referred up to senior officials and, where the risk is judged to be high, to Ministers for approval. We emphatically reject torture as both illegal and repugnant. The prevention of torture has long been a government priority.
more like this

answer text
The UK has been a strong and consistent advocate for free and fair elections in Guyana. We, and colleagues from other diplomatic missions and international organisations, closely monitored the run-up to, and conduct of, the general election in May 2015 and local elections in March 2016. Both were deemed free and fair. The process for selecting the new head of the Election Commission is clearly laid out in the Guyanese Constitution and the President is currently following that process. The British High Commissioner in Georgetown maintains a regular dialogue with the Government of Guyana at the highest level, including on issues such as the rule of law, good governance and tackling corruption, all of which are high priorities for the UK.
more like this

answer text
The violence and instability in Lebanon's 12 Palestine refugee camps remain areas of concern for the UK. The violence that took place in Ein El Hilweh on 15 January was an appalling demonstration of the severe difficulties that affect daily life in the camp for both the civilian population and United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) staff members. The UK values UNRWA's commitment to the welfare and development of Palestinian refugees, and the impact of violence on the safety of UNRWA staff members and their ability to deliver UNRWA services continues to alarm us. Although it is not the UK's position to routinely raise specific camp security incidents with the Government of Lebanon, Palestinian refugee issues are monitored closely and raised in our regular discussions with the Lebanese Government.
more like this
