answer text <p>The Ministry of Justice publishes information on the number of appeals against magistrates’ decisions dealt with in the Crown Court: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/criminal-court-statistics-quarterly-april-to-june-2023/criminal-court-statistics-quarterly-april-to-june-2023" target="_blank">Criminal court statistics quarterly: April to June 2023 - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)</a>.</p><p>However, data linking the Crown Court appeal case to the initial magistrates’ case is not held centrally. This information may be held on court records but to examine individual court records would be of disproportionate costs.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The information can be found in the tables below. The 2020-21 and 2021-22 decrease is likely reflective of the fact that there were fewer cases throughout the magistrates’ court as a whole due to COVID-19. As such there are fewer cases capable of being appealed and therefore fewer cases eligible to receive legal aid funding. Expenditure has started to increase in the most recent full year for which we have data.</p><p> </p><p>a) Legal aid expenditure for appeals against sentence:</p><table><tbody><tr><td><p>Financial Year</p></td><td><p>Expenditure</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2018-19</p></td><td><p>£439,465.31</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2019-20</p></td><td><p>£611,222.85</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2020-21</p></td><td><p>£361,743.23</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2021-22</p></td><td><p>£352,904.74</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2022-23</p></td><td><p>£403,672.22</p></td></tr></tbody></table><p> </p><p>b) Legal aid expenditure for appeals against conviction:</p><p> </p><table><tbody><tr><td><p>Financial Year</p></td><td><p>Expenditure</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2018-19</p></td><td><p>£990,682.64</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2019-20</p></td><td><p>£935,538.69</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2020-21</p></td><td><p>£560,440.80</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2021-22</p></td><td><p>£636,593.57</p></td></tr><tr><td><p>2022-23</p></td><td><p>£690,009.23</p></td></tr></tbody></table>
