answer text <p>As part of this Spending Review Period (financial years 2021-22 to 2024-25) the department established a ringfence of £6.6 billion for R&amp;D across the four years. In the first three years of this Spending Review period the department exceeded its targets and spent over £6 billion. Whilst forecasts for R&amp;D spend for this financial year are subject to change, we ultimately expect to comfortably exceed the £6.6 billion ringfenced figure by the end of this financial year.</p><p> </p><p>Furthermore, as part of the announcement to uplift defence spending to 2.5% GDP by 2030, we are making a new commitment to ring-fence at least 5% of the defence budget for research and development from 2025-26 onwards, with an increased focus on dual use technologies or where there can be significant spillover effects from military to civil R&amp;D.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>The DragonFire Laser Directed Energy Weapons accelerated programme, announced in April 2024 by the Secretary of State for Defence, will see £350 million in government investment by April 2027 to deliver minimum deployable capability. The accelerated programme is based on the DragonFire technology demonstrator which has seen £100 million of joint investment from MOD and UK industry since 2017. With £50 million funded by MOD and an additional £50 million funded by industry partners. The MOD is committed to the continued investment in UK Sovereign DEW technology, to provide cutting edge capability to the Armed Forces at pace.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The MOD has committed to accelerating DragonFire Laser Directed Energy Weapons (DEW) into operational capability by equipping multiple Royal Navy vessels with DragonFire systems from 2027 and all systems planned to be operational by 2030. DragonFire systems will be installed on Navy platforms around five years faster than previously planned service dates and will establish Laser DEW capability across multiple vessels.</p> more like this
