Defence continues to work at pace with experts across Government and reference other schemes, such as the Canadian scheme, to establish an appropriate scheme for the financial award, and is currently working within the £50 million limit as recommended in the report.</p><p> </p><p>Development of the scheme is at an early stage so the Government cannot yet confirm the details, the expected number of claimants, or the likely size of awards. Defence encourages those affected to register their interest in applying for a financial award by completing the LGBT veterans: support and next steps - GOV.UK webpage. The Government will now consider the report and recommendations and decide which Departments are best placed to take action. Defence is committed to responding in full in due course after giving the report due consideration, as per the terms of reference. Defence has accepted the recommendation of a financial award, noting that such schemes take time to establish. The review underlines Defence's unwavering commitment to understanding how best to support its veteran and LGBT community.</p><p>The review was published on 19 July 2023 and among its recommendations is one which suggests a financial award. Defence has accepted the recommendation, noting that such schemes take time to establish. The Government is committed to listening to veterans and improving our services to them.</p><p> </p><p>The experiences detailed in the Northumbria University and Fighting with Pride report do not represent what Defence stands for, and it will always be deeply regrettable that any of our personnel were subjected to such treatment.</p><p> </p><p>Whilst the research report from Northumbria University and Fighting With Pride provides helpful context to the lived experience of LGBT Veterans, the government is committed to considering the findings and recommendations in Lord Etherton’s LGBT Veterans Independent Review. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/06/2021 answer text <p>My predecessor as Minister for Defence People and Veterans publicly apologised for the historic treatment of the LGBT veteran community and I reiterate that this treatment was entirely unacceptable. LGBT personnel have made, and continue to make, significant contributions to the Armed Forces.</p><p>I am proud of this Government’s record on improving equality. We made it possible for men with eligible historical convictions for decriminalised behaviours to apply to have their convictions disregarded and we are in the process of exploring how further Service Offences can be brought within the scope of the scheme to enable more veterans to benefit from it.</p><p>We have stated that we will go beyond existing actions in righting historic wrongs to the LGBT veteran community and I remain committed to doing so. Work is underway which will seek not only to understand and acknowledge the impacts of pre-millennium practices in the Armed Forces relating to gender identity and sexual orientation, but also where appropriate to address these impacts.
