answer text
Installation of the Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) II involves the integration of multiple Tornado GR4 aircraft systems. BAE Systems is managing this through a Weapon System Specification from which it has flowed down specific equipment specifications to the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). The OEMs detail how they have met the specific equipment specification by providing a Declaration of Design Performance in a format specified by Panavia, the original manufacturer of the aircraft. BAE Systems manage boundary control.

TCAS II is cleared for use in Traffic Advisory mode on the operationally capable Tornado GR4 fleet.

It is planned that a minimum of 42 Tornado GR4 will be fitted with TCAS II.

It should be noted this is the first time ever a Collision Avoidance System has been fitted to a combat fast jet, anywhere in the world, that we know of.
more like this

question text To ask the Secretary of State for Defence, pursuant to the Answer of 26 November 2014 to Question 215200, how the overall tolerability level was calculated; and how the figure of 0.84 per 1,000 was arrived at for the Tornado when the level for one primary accident set, mid-air collision, was 0.86 per 1,000. more like this

answer text
The figure of 0.86 per 1,000 is derived from a 2012 Defence Science and Technology Laboratory report. This modelled an estimate of the expected future level of Tornado Mid-Air Collisions from 2011 through the remaining service life of Tornado GR4.

The figure of 0.84 per 1,000 uses a different metric, in accordance with the Military Aviation Authority Regulatory Article (RA) 1210 Annex A. This metric is the Rate of Death for Tornado GR4 aircrew based on actual historic fatalities covering all accident sets over a defined period, and is now used as the starting position for tolerability judgements.
more like this

answer text
The RAF maintains the flexibility to adapt to a changing world and we have decided that the Tornado GR4 force should sustain three, rather than two, frontline squadrons based out of RAF Marham, for another year beyond 31 March 2015. This is a pragmatic measure to provide resilience during the transition from Tornado to Typhoon. The planned out of service date for the Tornado GR4 fleet remains 2019.
more like this

answer text
The Strategic Defence and Security Review 2010 did not decide to disband Number II(AC) Tornado squadron. It took the decision to move, as part of our plans for Future Force 2020, to a fast jet fleet of Typhoon and Joint Strike Fighter aircraft, and to retain a reduced Tornado fleet in the transitional period. Decisions on the timetable for reducing the Tornado fleet were made subsequently and are adjusted as necessary based on advice. Most recently I decided to retain a third Tornado squadron, including Number II(AC) squadron, for an additional year until March 2016.
more like this

answer text
As part of the phased reduction of the RAF’s Tornado GR4 fleet, aircraft allocated to disbanded squadrons are assessed against a range of criteria including flying hour life consumed, embodied capabilities and future maintenance requirements. Depending on the result of this assessment, aircraft are reallocated to Front Line squadrons, returned to BAE Systems for maintenance or upgrade, placed in storage for future use or selected for spares recovery. Components and equipment for which no further beneficial use can be identified are disposed of through normal channels.

more like this
