answer text
The allocation of Opposition Days is set down in Standing Orders. The hon. Member should also know that it is not unusual for Her Majesty’s Government to provide additional Opposition days.

As with Opposition Days, the allocation of Backbench Business days is set out in Standing Orders. Again, a motion to provide for additional time is not required. I am sure the hon. Member will acknowledge that in previous Parliaments, HMG provided additional time beyond the requirement of the Standing Orders. I am happy to consider any reasonable request for additional time for Backbench Business subject to the progress of Government business.

As mentioned in UIN 3021, the hon. Member may recall that in the extended Parliamentary session of 2010-12, the Government did provide extra days for Private Members’ Bills but those dates were approved at a later date.
