answer text
During 1016-17 the Government provided a grant of £13.4m to support security measures for the Jewish Community. On 01 March I was pleased to announce a continuation of the grant at the same level for 2017-18.

The Jewish Community Protective Security Grant makes funding available to all Jewish free, state and independent schools, colleges and nurseries to employ security guards during operating hours. Grant funding is also used to improve security at many synagogues through the implementation of a range of solutions including guarding and physical measures. These funded security measures supplement existing site security arrangements and policing measures put in place following the increase in the national threat level in August 2014, and enhanced after the shocking events in Paris and Copenhagen, which has resulted in heightened police activity around Jewish sites.

The Government has also ensured locations such as synagogues and educational establishments have access to high-quality advice and guidance, provided by the police and others, so they know what further steps they can take to reduce vulnerability.

Public vigilance, the work of the police, and of the security and intelligence agencies all contribute to make our communities safer.

answer text
International students are included in net migration statistics that are produced by the Independent Office for National Statistics (ONS). In line with the internationally agreed UN definition, these statistics define a migrant as someone changing their normal place of residence for more than a year. Students are therefore included in the same way as other migrants. Other countries, such as the United States, Canada, and Australia also include students in their net migration figures. Like other migrants, students who stay for longer than 12 months have an impact on communities, infrastructure and services while they are here, so it is right that they are included in the net migration count.

There is no limit to the number of genuine international students who can come to study in the United Kingdom and there are absolutely no plans to change this.

more like this

answer text
UK Visas & Immigration launched an online version of the permanent residence application in September 2016. Initially it was available to sole EEA or Swiss applicants who qualified in their own right. In February 2017 the online application was extended to enable family members to apply online alongside their EEA or Swiss sponsor.

Those applying online may find the time taken to complete the application is quicker than the equivalent paper form as the online form directs the applicant to specific questions relating to their individual circumstances.

Online applicants can also use the European Passport Return Service. This service, available via participating local authorities, allows the original passport to be checked and returned immediately to the holder, with only a copy submitted along with the papers to the Home Office.

UK Visas & Immigration are working towards digitalising all application routes for EU Nationals and their family members. The intention is to enable customers to apply online across our services and immigration routes in a straight-forward and customer-focused way.
