answer text
We are disappointed by the undue limitations that Russia has placed on election monitoring, a key element of democratic scrutiny. We are aware of a number of allegations made in relation to the conduct of the Duma elections. In addition, the measures taken by the Russian authorities to marginalise civil society, silence independent media, and exclude genuine opposition candidates from participating in the elections undermine political plurality, and are at odds with Russia's international commitments. We assess that the conduct of these elections represents a serious step back for democratic freedoms in Russia.
more like this

answer text
Working together on climate change is a shared priority for the UK, Greece and Turkey, as well as our other European counterparts. We welcome the emphasis Greece has given to tackling climate change, boosting green energy, legislating for net zero 2050, enacting an ambitious green, sustainable Recovery Plan and a phasing-out of coal-fired power stations. We look forward to welcoming Greece and Turkey as active partners at COP26 in November in Glasgow, along with our other global partners. We are developing a major green finance conference with Turkey to be held in 2022, designed to support the development of a green finance eco-system in Turkey in support of COP26 objectives. We have also been working with partners in France, Germany and Italy on collaborative initiatives to support Turkey's climate change efforts. In 2020/21 we have proposed a major trade and investment initiative in Turkey targeted at developing Turkey's 'Green Bond' market in the run up to the COP26 conference. We will continue to work with our partners on these important issues.

answer text
The UK is working with COVAX and its international partners, including the World Health Organisation and UNICEF in support of country governments, to allocate vaccines according to need, and ensure rapid rollout of doses to priority groups and prevent wastage. Individual countries will decide whether they wish to accept vaccines, whether donated bilaterally or allocated by COVAX.

The capacity of health systems in delivering doses, and their expiry dates are taken into account in these decisions. At country level, support includes strengthening secure and resilient supply chains for distribution, administering COVID-19 vaccines, including in hard-to-reach locations, and working with communities to build vaccine confidence. We are also engaging through our humanitarian networks to ensure that delivery planning and financing addresses the challenges of delivery in fragile environments. We monitor delivery progress and challenges through our country network and engagement with regional agencies.

answer text
The FCDO remains committed to the Global Media Freedom campaign launched in 2018. Through the UK's co-chairing of the Media Freedom Coalition we are working to improving media freedom domestically and internationally. Many European countries are members of the Coalition. The Foreign Secretary has not raised press freedom in Central Asia in his recent calls with European counterparts. However, The UK's diplomatic network champions media freedom, including in Central Asia, with Missions hosting and advocating on these issues on a regular basis, where media freedom is under attack. FCDO officials also engage regularly on this and other human rights issues relating to Central Asia with our European partners through our engagement with international organisations such as the OSCE the UN Human Rights Council.
more like this

answer text
The UK is committed to addressing violence against women and girls overseas. Gender Equality (encompassing LGBT rights, women's rights, and domestic violence) is a priority for the FCDO, including in Russia, and we continue to support civil society organisations working on gender-related issues. Impunity for attacks on journalists in Russia and Belarus remains a major problem. Journalists who seek to uncover issues like corruption are often faced with threats, violence and harassment. We continue to urge the Russian authorities to fully investigate these cases and ensure the safety of all activists and journalists, and have repeatedly called on the Belarusian authorities to release journalists who have been arbitrarily detained, and to hold to account those responsible for attacks on journalists.
more like this

Many workers and trade unionists have paid a heavy price for their support for democracy and freedoms in Belarus, including prison sentences and loss of employment. The UK continues to call on the Belarusian authorities to release all those imprisoned and facing politically motivated charges, and to engage in genuine dialogue with political opposition. I did so most recently on 16 August in response to the Belarusian authorities' designation of content from TUT.BY as extremist.
