answer text
The UK Government takes all allegations of human rights violations very seriously, and we regularly raise Mr Johal's case directly with the Government of India at official and Ministerial level. The Prime Minister raised Mr Johal's case with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 April as part of a wide-ranging discussion. The Foreign Secretary last raised Mr Johal's case with the Indian Minister of External Affairs, Dr Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, on 31 March 2022. Consular staff have attended a number of hearings in Mr Johal's case in an observer capacity, and did so on 2, 3, 4, 7, and 9 June. This Government will continue to look to raise our concerns about Mr Johal's case at all appropriate opportunities.
more like this

answer text
Misinformation is rife in Myanmar and the UK is committed to tackling it. The military continues to perpetuate propaganda, including their unsubstantiated claims of electoral fraud in 2020. In response to the February 2021 coup, the UK Government established the Myanmar Witness programme which verifies and reports on open-source information of serious human rights violations and abuses. This project is essential to countering disinformation. We call on the regime to end its obstruction of the Myanmar people's right to information and freedom of expression, which is vital to de-escalating the crisis.

The UK Government strongly believes that the rights of individuals and independent media to express opinions and peacefully challenge authority are essential to a free and open society. The FCDO launched its media freedom campaign in 2018 to shine a global spotlight on media freedom and to raise the cost to those who abuse the media. Myanmar remains a priority country for the UK on media freedom.

answer text
As the Foreign Secretary made clear in her statement of 24th May, these latest reports provide further shocking details of China's gross human rights violations in Xinjiang, adding to the already extensive body of evidence from Chinese government documents, first-hand testimony, satellite imagery and visits by our own diplomats to the region.

However, it remains the long-standing policy of the British Government not to make determinations in relation to genocide. Genocide is a crime and there must be no impunity for it. As with other crimes, judgment should be made after all available evidence has been considered by a competent court. The UK has led international efforts to hold China to account at the UN, imposed sanctions on senior Chinese government officials, and announced measures to help ensure no UK organisations are complicit in these violations through their supply chains. We will continue to act with our international partners to increase the pressure on China to change its behaviour.
