answer text <p>The Government recognises the need for the National Health Service to be able to recruit effectively from abroad and the Immigration White Paper, <em>The UK’s future skills-based immigration system</em>, published in December 2018, sets out the foundation for a single immigration system, where it is workers’ skills that matter, not where they come from.</p><p>The Government has taken steps to ensure that European Union citizens can continue to come and work in the NHS once we have left the EU. In March 2019, we put in place legislation that ensures the continued recognition of qualifications from EU countries by all professional regulators covering the health and social care sectors. This means that EU citizens will continue to be able to come and practice in the United Kingdom once we have left the EU, even if we leave without a ‘deal’.</p><p>The NHS Long Term Plan and interim People Plan have both set out a vital strategic framework to ensure that over the next 10 years the NHS will have the staff it needs so that nurses and doctors have the time they need to care, working in a supportive culture that allows them to provide the expert compassionate care they are committed to providing. The interim People Plan sets out how part of this will be made up from an expansion of international recruitment of NHS staff.</p><p> </p>

answer text <p>The Government recognises the need to be able to recruit effectively from abroad and the Immigration White Paper, <em>The UK’s future skills-based immigration system</em>, published in December 2018, sets out the foundation for a single immigration system, where it is workers’ skills that matter, not where they come from. This system will streamline the high-skilled visa route, by removing the Resident Labour Market Test and the Tier 2 Visa Cap. The Home Office is undertaking a programme of engagement to discuss the proposed measures with colleagues across Government and industry, to develop a future immigration system that works for the whole of the United Kingdom.</p><p>The Government wants to support the National Health Service in expanding international recruitment more widely, as this clearly has a role to play to meeting staffing shortages, especially in the short term. Recruitment of doctors and nurses is the responsibility of individual NHS organisations, a number of which do actively recruit from overseas, including from countries in the European Union. However, we also recognise the need to boost our domestic workforce as well. The NHS Long Term Plan sets out a vital strategic framework to ensure that, over the next 10 years, the NHS will have the staff it needs so that nurses and doctors are working in a supportive culture that allows them to provide the expert compassionate care they are committed to providing. Details of this will be explored more fully in the forthcoming Interim NHS People Plan.</p><p>The Government has taken steps to ensure that EU citizens can continue to come and work in the NHS once we have left the EU. Officials from the Department of Health and Social Care and the Home Office are working closely together to engage with the health and care sector to ensure views on the design of the future immigration system are heard.</p><p>However, we also recognise the need to boost our domestic workforce as well. The NHS Long Term Plan sets out a vital strategic framework to ensure that, over the next 10 years, the National Health Service will have the staff it needs so that nurses and doctors are working in a supportive culture that allows them to provide the expert compassionate care they are committed to providing. Baroness Dido Harding, Chair of NHS Improvement, working closely with Sir David Behan, Chair of Health Education England, will lead a number of programmes to develop a detailed workforce implementation plan. Baroness Harding and Sir David will present these initial recommendations to the Department this spring.</p>

answer text <p>The Government is committed to ensuring that the National Health Service is able to recruit as many doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals from abroad, as it needs, once the United Kingdom has left the European Union. Our future immigration system will prioritise high and medium-skilled workers and the Tier 2 visa cap will be abolished. Aside from the salary threshold, which is the subject of ongoing engagement with employers, there will be no cap on numbers and the Government will also be removing the Resident Labour Market Test for skilled workers – this will remove a month from the process of recruiting a migrant. As we bring the EU into a new single immigration system we will make the existing sponsorship system more streamlined.</p><p>Additionally, the Government has introduced legislation that will largely maintain existing arrangements for the recognition of European health and care qualifications. European qualifications that are currently recognised automatically by UK regulators (doctors, nurses, midwives, dentists and pharmacists), will continue to be recognised after the UK leaves the EU. European qualifications that are not accepted automatically will continue to be assessed against the standard of UK qualifications, as is currently the case.</p><p>The future arrangement for the recognition of European health and care qualifications, including Spanish qualifications, is subject to the outcome of negotiations on the UK’s future economic partnership with the EU.</p>

answer text <p>We have been clear from the beginning of this process that we want European Union nationals currently working in the National Health Service, to stay after we leave the EU. As part of this, we opened the public testing phase of the EU Settlement Scheme on 21 January 2019. Following a successful private testing phase in December 2018, the scheme is now open to all EU nationals in the United Kingdom.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has undertaken a targeted communications campaign with stakeholders, employers and representative bodies in the health sector to ensure that as many of our EU workforce are aware of the straight forward and user-friendly scheme that allows them to secure their long-term rights to stay and work in the UK after we leave the EU.</p><p> </p><p>Furthermore, to help facilitate as many applications as possible, the Prime Minister announced on 21 January 2019 that, as of 30 March 2019, all applications to the settlement scheme will be free. Additionally, where individuals have applied, or do apply, before that date, and are charged an application fee, then this fee will be refunded.</p>

answer text <p>The United Kingdom’s future immigration system is set out in the Government’s Immigration White Paper, which was published on 19 December 2018. At the time of publication, my Rt. Hon. Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department announced that the salary threshold would be the subject of further engagement. The Government is continuing to work with employers, representative bodies and charities in the health and social care sector to help contribute to the discussion on an appropriate threshold.</p><p> </p><p>European Union nationals currently working in the health and social care sectors can apply to the EU Settlement Scheme to secure their long-term status in the UK. The scheme is now open and, further to the Prime Minister’s announcement on 21 January 2019, from 30 March 2019 onwards, EU nationals will not have to pay for their application. Any application made before that date, including those that have already been made, will be reimbursed.</p> more like this
