answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 29/06/2022 answer text <p>NHS England and NHS Improvement are implementing a care bundle for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) on discharge from hospital which aims to reduce the overall number of patients readmitted, including the rates at 30 and 90 days. This care bundle includes five actions to ensure improved clinical outcomes for patients admitted with an acute exacerbation of COPD. Patients should receive a review of medication and inhaler use; a written self-management plan and emergency drug pack; an assessment and referral for smoking cessation; referral for pulmonary rehabilitation if appropriate; and a follow up call within 72 hours of discharge. However, there has been significant engagement with National Health Service health and care staff through the Core20PLUSConnectors programmes, raising awareness of the importance of offering COVID-19, flu and pneumonia vaccinations as part of ongoing disease management reviews.</p><p>Increasing the uptake of COVID-19, flu, and pneumonia vaccination through the Core20PLUS5 approach will improve population health and reduce acute, infective exacerbations of COPD. It will also reduce emergency admissions, accident and emergency attendances and subsequent elective respiratory follow up care. The respiratory mission aims to reduce pressure on the National Health Service and improve clinical outcomes, treatment and diagnosis.</p><p>Implementation plans to deliver on the Life Sciences Vision are being developed. The figures for emergency hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in this period are not available in the requested format and a comparative assessment has not been made.</p><p>In January 2019, the Government launched the Clean Air Strategy, which sets out plans for dealing with all sources of air pollution to save lives and protect nature.</p><p>The Department collaborated with the National Review of Asthma Deaths led by the Royal College of Physicians which examined the circumstances surrounding deaths from asthma and reported in 2015. This has the overarching objective of improving outcomes for people with respiratory disease. The NHS Long Term Plan sets out how the NHS will take action in a number of areas, including expanding programmes that support earlier diagnosis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and increasing access to treatments.</p><p> </p><p>From 2019, the National Health Service will build on the existing NHS RightCare programme to reduce variation in the quality of spirometry testing (one of the tests used to diagnose COPD).</p><p> </p><p>The NHS is also planning to roll out the lung health check programme, which targets those most at risk of cancer. Based on the pioneering schemes in Manchester and Liverpool, the lung health check will not just identify more cancers quickly, but will also pick up cases of COPD.</p><p> </p><p>The NHS Long Term Plan also sets out the NHS’ ambition to improve access to treatments for COPD. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/11/2018 answer text <p>National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) Guidelines state that “Pulmonary rehabilitation should be made available to all appropriate people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) including those who have had a recent hospitalisation for an acute exacerbation” <sup>1</sup>.</p><p> </p><p>NHS England supports the national Asthma and COPD Audit Programme – led by the Royal College of Physicians – which provides data on a range of indicators to show opportunities for improving COPD outcomes. The audit shows that 13% of people with COPD are referred to pulmonary rehabilitation services<sup>2</sup>. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/11/2018 answer text <p>Pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) is one of the most effective treatments for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The Department supports the National Health Service to increase access to PR and improve the quality of care for people with long-term respiratory conditions.</p><p> </p><p>Respiratory disease is clinical priority in the NHS Long Term Plan. A working group has been developing policy proposals with the aim of delivering specific improvements in respiratory disease.
