answer text
The life sciences sector is among the most valuable and strategically important in the United Kingdom’s economy. The latest edition of the Government’s Life Sciences Competitiveness Indicators shows that in 2020, the UK ranked sixth out of 10 comparator countries for our share of patients recruited to a subset of commercial global studies for novel medicines. The UK also ranked seventh for the time taken between clinical trial application and first dose to first patient. This is up from tenth in 2019.

The indicators also show that, in 2020, the UK pharmaceutical industry spent over £5 billion on research and development (R&D) and has consistently been the largest industry to spend on R&D in the UK, making up more than a fifth of all R&D performed by industry between 2014 and 2020.

The National Health Service in England is internationally competitive in adopting innovative medicines. Industry data shows that there are five treatments available in England for every four in Europe and almost a third more cancer drugs.

answer text
As part of the Government’s HIV Action Plan, NHS England has expanded opt-out HIV testing in accident and emergency departments in areas of extremely high diagnosed HIV prevalence, over five cases per 1,000 people, a proven effective way to identify new HIV cases. NHS England is investing £20 million over three years, 2022/25, to support this activity.

We will be considering the full evidence from the first year of opt-out testing, alongside the data on progress towards our ambition of ending new HIV transmissions in England by 2030, to decide whether we further expand this programme to areas with high HIV prevalence that is two to five cases per 1,000 people. We will also share the findings from the opt-out testing programme with local health systems to inform local decisions on expansion.
more like this

answer text
As set out in the National Health Service Delivery plan for recovering urgent and emergency care services, virtual wards enable patients to remain in their own home supported by family or carers to recover quicker in a more comfortable environment. In some cases, virtual wards can replace the need for admission, and in others facilitate people being able to safely leave hospital sooner.

The NHS has successfully rolled out 7,000 virtual ward beds, with capacity increasing by nearly 50% since the summer. It has a further ambition to scale up capacity ahead of next winter to above 10,000 beds, with a longer-term ambition of reaching 40-50 virtual ward beds per 100,000 people. This would mean more than 50,000 admissions a month.
more like this
