answer text
On 31 July Health Education England (HEE) published the National Health Service workforce plan for England; setting out concrete steps for delivering 21,000 new posts (professional and allied) across the mental health system, with the expectation that 19,000 of these places would be filled by staff employed directly by the NHS. The plan focuses on both new staff and on improved retention of existing staff, as well as new roles and new models of mental health care. The plan can be found at:

https://www.hee.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/documents/CCS0717505185-1_FYFV%20Mental%20health%20workforce%20plan%20for%20England_v5%283%29.pdf

Implementation of the plan is being led by HEE and NHS England working through HEE Regional Leads and the NHS England Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships (STPs) who will need to demonstrate how the workforce plan is being taken into account by STPs as part of their future planning. This will include plans for expanding the mental health workforce in both primary and secondary care settings.

Staffing and service provision in the NHS in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales is a matter for each of the devolved administrations.
