answer text <p>The 1,000 additional medical school places that will available from September 2019 will be allocated through a competitive bidding process that is being managed by the Higher Education Funding Council for England and Health Education England (HEE). The published criteria against which bids will be assessed include how proposals support specialities such as psychiatry. This is part of a historic expansion announced by my Rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State in October 2016 and includes an additional 500 places allocated for September 2018 entry.</p><p> </p><p>In ‘Stepping forward to 2020/21: A mental health workforce plan for England’, HEE sets out a plan to transform the mental health workforce, including a number of key actions to increase workforce supply. Current initiatives to improve recruitment into psychiatry training posts include increasing the number of training placements in psychiatry in the Foundation Programme and supporting the Royal College of Psychiatrists on its marketing campaign ‘Choose Psychiatry’.</p><p> </p><p>From 2018 HEE will introduce an additional training pathway (run through Child and Adolescent Mental Health) to enable doctors to specialise in child and adolescent psychiatry.</p>

answer text <p>The data on the number of vacancies in the National Health Service diagnostic workforce is not available centrally.</p><p> </p><p>NHS Digital collects data on the number of advertised vacancies across the NHS. The NHS vacancy statistics for the period 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017 shows there were 1,261 full-time equivalent vacancies with ‘diagnostic’ in the title.</p><p> </p><p>The NHS is meeting six out of eight cancer waiting times standards (August 2017). This is despite 970,000 more people being urgently referred in 2016/17 compared to 2009/10 - an increase of 108%.</p><p> </p><p>Specific work has been taking place on the recruitment of Clinical (non-medical) Endoscopists. Progress is on track to meet the target of 200 new non-medical Endoscopists by the end of 2018.</p><p> </p><p>This work is taking place alongside a greater focus on the 62 day cancer waiting time target with investments in pathway coordinators and redesigned, quicker clinical pathways.</p><p> </p><p>Public Health England, which leads the Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) screening programme, is working with Health Education England and others to understand the training and capacity demand deriving from the introduction of FIT in April 2018.</p>

answer text <p>The Department is aware that the rise in the cost of indemnity as a result of the change in the personal discount rate announced by the then Lord Chancellor (Rt. hon. Elizabeth Truss MP) in February 2017 is an area of concern for general practitioners (GPs).</p><p> </p><p>The Department has been assessing the potential effect of the discount rate change by working closely with GPs and Medical Defence Organisations to ensure that appropriate funding is available to meet the additional costs to GPs, recognising the crucial role they play in the delivery of National Health Service care.</p><p> </p><p>On 12 October 2017, my Rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Health announced that the Department is planning, subject to examination of relevant issues, the development of a state-backed indemnity scheme for general practice in England.</p><p> </p><p>The Department will continue to work with the Royal College of General Practitioners, the British Medical Association and other GP representatives to engage with the sector on this issue.</p>
