answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/06/2016 answer text <p>The information requested is not available.</p><p> </p><p>The Department’s National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) was established in 2006 to increase the volume of applied health research for the benefit of patients and the public, drive faster translation of basic science discoveries into tangible benefits for patients and the economy, and develop and support the people who conduct and contribute to applied health research. The NIHR spent £30.8 million on research relating to metabolic and endocrine disease in 2014/15 (the latest available figure). Most of this investment (£24.4 million in 2014/15) is in infrastructure for research in metabolic and endocrine disease where spend on specific disease areas such as type 1 diabetes cannot be separated from total infrastructure expenditure. More than 3,000 people took part in over 180 local and regional meetings and events including patients, general practitioners (GPs), practice managers, patient groups and the research community. A range of views were expressed during this engagement and these have helped to shape the programme, including the addition of a phased approach to implementation starting with a pathfinder stage.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Since then the care.data programme has continued to engage with stakeholders with a particular focus on engagement in the pathfinder areas. Patients who are over 16, registered at a pathfinder practice, will receive a letter and booklet about information sharing and an opt-out form. Awareness raising activities are planned in each pathfinder area to complement the delivery of the letter and the decision to send patient communications will be made with each pathfinder area based on their readiness to proceed.
