answer text <p>Violence against women and girls is unacceptable. In order to deliver long term change we need to address the negative attitudes expectations and behaviours relating to women and girls; both integrating across programmes and standalone projects. DFID is the only international development donor with a dedicated Violence Against Women and Girls Team working to embed best practice, including on shifting social norms to tackle violence against women and girls, across UK Aid programmes. This approach is achieving results.</p> more like this

answer text <p>The UK is one of the only countries in the world with a dedicated team working on tackling Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG); we currently have 6.5 FTE (Full Time Equivalent) staff working on this policy area.</p><p>The VAWG helpdesk provides advice for teams across government on programmes and projects preventing violence against women and girls. The helpdesk is managed by the VAWG team in DFID’s Policy Division.</p> more like this

answer text <p>Globally, 1 in 3 women have experienced some form of physical and/or sexual violence in their lifetime.</p><p>Since 2012 DFID has nearly doubled its programming on violence against women and girls, for example our £35 million programme to tackle Female Genital Mutilation which is helping to reduce the practice by 30% in 17 countries across Africa. On 27 November we announced additional support to the UN Trust Fund to End Violence Against Women that will benefit over 500,000 women.</p><p> </p> more like this

answer text <p>According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees there are over 4.8 million registered Syrian refugees in neighbouring countries. Of this total figure, Turkey hosts over 2.7 million; Lebanon 1 million; Jordan more than 655,000; Iraq over 228,000; Egypt over 115,000; and 29,000 Syrian refugees are in North Africa. A further 1.1 million applications for asylum have been made by Syrians throughout Europe, with the majority in Germany and Serbia.</p><p>The UK is at the forefront of the response to the crisis and our support is reaching hundreds of thousands of people affected by it across the region and inside Syria. Between February 2012 and August 2016 we have provided over 21.7 million food rations, vaccines to over 6.3 million people and medical consultations to over 4.9 million people.</p> more like this

answer text <p>In the East of Aleppo city, DFID partners assess that the supply of water is sporadic and the quality inadequate as a result of damage arising from the ongoing Regime offensive. To help address this, DFID implementing partners have supported repairs to water networks and generators and provided water purification tablets and jerry cans. Most recently, she raised this matter with Stephen O’Brien, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator on 30 November.
