answer text
The UK Government has committed £427 million to eradicating the Ebola outbreak in Sierra Leone, £216 million of which has been disbursed to support the response. This package of support covers the costs of UK operations in the ongoing crisis response, regional preparedness, and early recovery activities.

As part of this response the UK has supported more than half of all the beds available for Ebola patients in Sierra Leone, funded over 100 burial teams, trained 4,000 frontline staff, provided three labs to test one third of all samples collected nationally and delivered over one million PPE suits and 150 vehicles. It is clear that our strategy is working and the numbers of cases have significantly reduced. This is real progress and cause for cautious optimism that we can beat this outbreak.

more like this

answer text
The Ebola crisis has demonstrated that it is critical to invest in national health systems in epidemic prevention, preparedness and response in order significantly to reduce the risk of a global epidemic. The UK will work with the Government of Sierra Leone and partners to seek a legacy of effective systems and structures that will contribute to improved future service delivery and infrastructure. This will ensure that should Sierra Leone be faced with a subsequent outbreak of Ebola or an epidemic of another disease, it is able to respond effectively.

Between 2005 and 2010 DFID spent £22.9 million on the health sector in Sierra Leone, and contributed a further £63.8 million between 2010 and 2014.

more like this

answer text
The Department for International Development is leading the Government’s operational response in Sierra Leone. To date, the UK has committed £325 million to eradicating the disease in Sierra Leone. With UK help, Sierra Leone now has enough treatment and isolation beds for Ebola patients, enough laboratories to test for the virus quickly and effectively, enough trained burial teams to make sure bodies are buried quickly, safely and with dignity, and a command and control structure that is making the Ebola response more efficient and effective.

I welcome reporting by the World Health Organisation that the number of new cases of Ebola in Sierra Leone has fallen dramatically in recent weeks. From a peak of 537 cases in late November, most recent reporting was 63 cases at the end of February. It is clear that our strategy is working and we must continue our focus on getting to zero cases as quickly as possible.

more like this
