answer text
The humanitarian situation in Idlib is extremely serious. DFID continues to closely monitor the situation in Northwest Syria, and we are concerned about the impact of recent escalations of violence on civilians. So far this financial year we have allocated £40 million in support for the region, and are keeping this under active review as the situation on the ground develops.

Our support in this region continues to provide Syrians with shelter, clean water and sanitation, mental health services, as well as aiding health workers and facilities that have been affected by escalating violence. DFID partners are working tirelessly to meet the growing needs among displaced people.

In 2018 alone, DFID support in Idlib provided approximately 836,000 people with access to clean drinking water, 873,000 medical consultations, 69,000 food rations and access to formal education for 110,000 children.
more like this

answer text
As one of the largest donors to the crisis since 2011, the UK remains at the forefront of the humanitarian response in Syria. Our support is focused on providing humanitarian assistance to those in most acute need. To date, we have pledged over £2.8 billion of Official Development Assistance to the Syria crisis – our largest response to a single humanitarian crisis – to alleviate the extreme suffering inside Syria and provide vital support to refugees and host communities in neighbouring countries. This includes our recent pledge at the third annual “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region Conference”, where we committed to provide at least £400 million towards the Syria crisis in 2019.

UK funding is currently implemented through 16 agencies, including the UN, international NGOs and some private sector companies, which deliver much needed food, clean water, shelter and healthcare. For security reasons, we do not publicly disclose the identity of our partners operating in Syria.

answer text
Aid delivered by road by trusted humanitarian partners is by far the most effective way to meet needs in Syria and to ensure that it reaches those most in need. We have, however, examined all options as part of our determination to do everything we can to alleviate the suffering of the Syrian people.

Airdrops, manned or using drones, are not capable of meeting either the scale of needs or delivering many of the kinds of aid that could address the priority needs that we see in Syria (e.g. safe drinking water, health support). Furthermore, we judge that such an operation would carry a high level of risk because the consent is needed of those who control the airspace and those on the ground that could threaten aircraft. There is nothing to suggest that the Assad regime would provide such consent, given that it continues to use the denial of aid as a weapon of war.
more like this
