We are leading the way by placing its key principles – such as greater transparency and more effective prioritisation of aid – at the heart of our own response, and encouraging others to do the same. At the 2016 London Syria conference, we pushed for a shift to more multi-year financing to enable better long-term planning, and helped secure pledges of $6.1 billion. However, the Assad regime is besieging the area, preventing the delivery of new supplies. This is leading to a deterioration in already dire humanitarian conditions, with reports of growing food shortages and cases of acute malnutrition. We helped launch UNICEF’s No Lost Generation Initiative, which provides education, protection, and mental health support for children affected by the Syria crisis. Food and medical supplies are delivered into this area cross-border from Jordan and are assessed to be meeting priority needs. Russia, Turkey and Iran have also declared ‘de-escalation zones’ in Idlib, Eastern Ghouta and Northern Homs. Food and medical supplies enter Idlib cross-border from Turkey, but the Assad regime continues to severely restrict aid going into the other two zones. Tatweer operates in 16 Syrian Local Councils identified as needing immediate basic services support across Idlib, Aleppo, Daraa and Rif Damascus governorates.</p><p> </p><p>DFID has extensive controls in place to ensure that UK aid reaches those who need it and that it does not benefit extremists or terror groups, including vetting processes to ensure such groups are not part of the Councils with which we work.
