answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 28/01/2019 answer text <p>The UK remains at the forefront of the humanitarian response to the Syria crisis, which includes providing life-saving and life-changing support to millions of Syrians who have taken refuge in neighbouring countries. Working with the governments of neighbouring countries, including Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, our assistance is focused on the most vulnerable Syrian refugees in the region, including children, to meet their immediate needs and improve their lives until they can safely return to Syria.</p><p> </p><p>Education is a key part of this work. We rely on regular assessment of education needs and learning outcomes, from implementing partners and UN agencies, in order to inform our decisions around our education response in the region. As a result, DFID funded partners in the region are providing educational activities, and child friendly spaces where children receive learning support and psychosocial care, both within refugee camps and in host communities. We helped launch UNICEF’s No Lost Generation Initiative, which provides education, protection, and mental health support for children in Syria and neighbouring countries. In 2016/2017 alone, DFID helped provide over 350,000 children in Syria with access to formal primary education, half of whom were girls. In addition, over 80,000 children, including girls, were provided with access to non-formal education. As well as supporting children with food, shelter and healthcare, the UK helped to launch UNICEF’s No Lost Generation Initiative, which provides education, protection, and mental health support for children in Syria and neighbouring countries. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/07/2016 answer text <p>The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) estimates that a total of 5.4 million Syrian children and youth (aged 5-17 years) inside Syria are in need of educational assistance. The UK works closely with UNICEF and other partners to protect access to education across the whole of Syria, improve safety in and around schools, and maintain the quality of teaching and learning as far as is possible in an active war-zone. However, it is not possible systematically to measure the quality of learning and teaching inside Syria in the way that the UK does in more stable countries. UK education assistance has supported around half a million children inside Syria.</p><p>UK funding supports the provision of vital learning materials, remedial and alternative education for children who have lost months or years of schooling, and access to the official exams that enable children to secure higher education and jobs. The UK is on track to deliver on its Conference commitments to support education, including spending £40million a year on education in Lebanon and £20million a year in Jordan. We will continue to work closely with these partners to track progress, including on enrolment in the upcoming school year.</p><p>The UK is supporting the provision of informal and formal education opportunities to 1.1m children in Syria and the region. Children continue to be killed, injured and recruited by parties to the conflict. According to the UN, 35 schools were attacked in 2015 alone, with one quarter of all Syrian schools now closed, damaged or destroyed. Consequently 2.1 million children inside Syria are out of school. This will have profound implications for years to come if it is not urgently addressed.</p><p> </p><p>That is why the UK helped to launch and mobilise international support for the No Lost Generation Initiative (NLGI). As part of this support, we have allocated £115 million to provide protection, psychosocial support and education for children affected by the crisis in Syria and the region. As a result, more than 308,000 children have been reached with child protection initiatives inside Syria, mainly in the form of psychosocial consultations and child-friendly spaces. In addition, almost 228,000 children have received formal and informal education inside Syria, allowing them to catch up on lost learning time.</p><p> </p><p>The &quot;Supporting Syria and the Region London 2016&quot; Conference was held on 4 February last week, and more than US$11 billion was pledged to support people in Syria and the region affected by the conflict, the largest amount raised in one day for a humanitarian crisis. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/02/2016 answer text <p>At the Conference on Supporting Syria and the Region being held in London on 4<sup>th</sup> February, we want the international community to agree a new goal that all Syrian refugee children and affected host country children are in education – formal school or non-formal – by the end of 2016/17. Equally, for inside Syria, it is our aim to increase access to good quality schooling or other learning opportunities such as self-learning and non-formal education. In neighbouring countries we will also increase access to vocational or skills training and higher education for children and youth.</p><p>At the Conference our ambition is that international donors, governments from countries in the region hosting refugees, non-governmental organisations and the private sector come together to agree a set of reciprocal financial and policy commitments. The UK and co-hosts are working with donors and other partners to secure increased funding for education under the UN-led appeals for 2016 and longer term, multi-year education funding commitments to ensure sustainability.
