answer text
The UK Government is strongly committed to meeting the needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs). We published a new Humanitarian Reform Policy in October last year which includes a focus on forced displacement and measures that are relevant for mitigating and responding more effectively to displacement. We believe our primary focus should now be at the global level to press for a more effective international response. For example, several UN Member States, including the UK, are now actively exploring options with the UN – including the idea of launching a UN High Level Panel on Internally Displaced Persons, which presents one way of galvanising greater political and operational attention and action on IDPs.
more like this

answer text
DFID has committed £237.5 million in humanitarian support to Iraq since 2014, including £20 million this financial year. This helps provide a vital lifeline to internally displaced people through the provision of emergency food, shelter, medical care and clean water. Additionally, the UK has committed over £30 million to improve conditions in liberated areas in Iraq, for instance by delivering basic services like water and electricity, removing mines and promoting community reconciliation. This will make it easier for internally displaced people from across the region to return safely to their areas of origin.
more like this

answer text
The number of cases reported to the Charity Commission by UK aid charities has increased sharply since the Secretary of State wrote to all of DFID’s major partners in February asking them to confirm that they have referred any and all concerns they have on specific cases to the relevant authorities. As more attention is paid to this topic, we expect reporting to continue to increase as confidence grows that action will be taken. What is clear is that sexual exploitation, abuse and harassment still occurs far too often. That is why the Secretary of State is absolutely determined to drive up safeguarding standards in the aid sector to prevent it occurring, to ensure that victims receive the support they need and to hold perpetrators to account.

Since February 2018, the Secretary of State has established a dedicated Safeguarding Unit; written to all of DFID’s major partners seeking assurance about their safeguarding approach; established new working groups with NGOs, donors and experts to identify and test solutions; and announced new safeguarding standards as part of DFID’s due diligence process. She has also taken this message to the international community, leading a collective letter to the UN Secretary General and hosting or speaking at international roundtables with the United Nations, international financial institutions and other donors, including at the recent World Bank Spring Meetings.

The UK is leading the change needed on this issue. We have made good progress since March and will continue to use every opportunity possible in the coming weeks and months to push for much more. The Secretary of State will host an international conference in London on the 18th October at which she will seek concrete commitments and actions from donors and all of the partners we work with.

answer text
Since its launch in 1988, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has successfully led global efforts that have reduced Wild Polio Virus cases by more than 99% from 350,000 cases a year in 125 countries to eight cases so far this year in only three endemic countries.

The UK has played a leading role in this process and UK support to the GPEI will mean up to 45 million children can be vaccinated against polio each year until 2020.

The UK Government has advocated strongly, with all relevant players, that the consequences of a reduction in polio funds (as eradication nears) must be understood and that the benefits of the polio eradication system for wider health systems are realised. The World Health Organisation will present a “Global Polio Transition Strategic Action Plan” to the World Health Assembly at the end of May 2018. The UK will scrutinise this carefully and hold WHO to account for its leadership of this area.
more like this

We have now committed £2.71 billion to the Syria Crisis to date, our largest ever response to a single humanitarian crisis. Of this, £2.3 billion has already been allocated by DFID to implementing partners including £910 million for humanitarian projects in Syria, and over £1.4 billion for projects in the region supporting Syrian refugees and host communities. DFID is currently funding 15 agencies implementing projects in Syria, including UN agencies, international NGOs, and some private sector companies.

Since 2012, our support has provided life-saving support to millions of Syrians, including over 22 million food rations, 9.9 million medical consultations, and over 9 million relief packages across Syria.
more like this
