We are using UK aid to its full effect to counter the health, humanitarian, and economic risks and impact of this pandemic in the developing world. We are working hard to ensure that our help reaches those most in need through close collaboration with our partners.</p><p>So far, the UK has provided up to £744 million of UK aid to help combat the virus and sent UK experts to support vulnerable countries to prepare for the virus. Funding includes research on vaccines, therapeutics and tests. The UK’s £75 million funding to the World Health Organization helps support its key role in providing technical support countries to establish COVID-19 testing strategies and capacity. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/05/2020 answer text <p>NGOs are key partners for DFID in responding to the unprecedented challenges arising from COVID-19. We know that in many places NGOs will be best placed to meet the needs of those most at risk. About one quarter of our country programmes are delivered through CSOs.</p><p>The Secretary of State recently announced a further £200 million for charities and international organisations to tackle coronavirus in developing countries, which brings DFID’s total support to date to £744 million. This includes funding for NGOs, including UK charities.</p><p>DFID is also adapting its programmes across our country network to respond to COVID-19 and we have committed significant new funding through the multilateral system. NGOs are also receiving significant extra funding through the DFID COVID-19 Hygiene and Behaviour Change Coalition. We will continue to keep our humanitarian investments under review.</p><p>DFID has been engaging regularly with the NGO sector to understand the challenges they are facing in tackling the COVID-19 pandemic, including regular virtual meetings with Baroness Sugg and our Permanent Secretary, Nick Dyer. The UK has, to date, pledged up to £744 million of UK aid to mitigate the health, humanitarian, and economic risks and impacts of COVID-19 in support of the poorest and most vulnerable.</p><p>We are working hard to ensure that our help reaches those most in need through close collaboration with our partners. Civil society plays a particularly important role in ensuring UK aid reaches the most vulnerable communities. Much of our work is delivered through our extensive country office network. We are currently reviewing our programme portfolio to be more responsive to COVID-19. For example, we are working with groups in Bangladesh to support and help mobilise a nationwide network of 50,000 Community Health Workers and volunteers to raise awareness of COVID-19 in their communities.</p><p>The UK is also providing £55 million to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 20/05/2020 answer text <p>The UK is supporting the Government of Kenya’s response to locusts through a £7 million contribution to the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation’s regional locust appeal, and core funding to the UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund, which has committed £7.5 million. This will help support efforts to control and manage the outbreak.</p><p>UK support to malaria is provided through the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and malaria (GFATM), to which the UK contributes approximately 10 per cent of the overall budget. To date, GFATM has disbursed approximately £311 million for malaria in Kenya, the majority of which has been used to procure key commodities for treatment, testing and bed nets.</p><p>On food shortages, since 2007, the UK has committed £255 million to establish and support the government’s Hunger Safety Net Programme (HSNP) in four arid counties. HSNP provides regular cash transfers to over 100,000 households, with capacity to reach an additional 275,000 households during drought periods. The transfers are largely used to meet beneficiaries’ food needs. The situation is particularly severe in Gaza, where the health system has shortages in specialised staff, drugs and equipment. As of 14 May, 20 cases have been detected in Gaza (of which 6 remain active). So far, cases have been contained and any community outbreak has been prevented.</p><p>The UK has pledged £744 million to support the global humanitarian response to COVID-19. Indirect impacts will be the result of disruption to, and a reduction in, health service delivery.</p><p>In response, we are flexing our funding and programming. We are building on our long-term investments to mitigate the threat of indirect impacts on various services and goods. These include reproductive health services and commodities as well as essential primary health care services, such as immunisation. We also aim to increase access and reduce prices for essential health commodities.</p><p>The UK Government is working with governments to ensure that essential malaria services continue, malaria patients are protected from COVID-19 and malaria programmes make good decisions about redeploying resources to national COVID-19 programmes in a sustainable way. The most recent publication contains <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/statistics-on-international-development-provisional-uk-aid-spend-2019" target="_blank">provisional aid spend for 201</a>9 and shows DFID region or country specific bilateral official development assistance (ODA) spend in Africa in 2019 was £2.448 billion.</p><p>In addition to region/country specific bilateral ODA, £2.607 billion was spent on projects where it has not been possible to assign to any single recipient country or region. A proportion of this will have been spent in Africa.</p><p>DFID’s total ODA spend in 2019 was £11.107 billion.</p><p>Spend in Africa above does not include imputed shares of UK funding to the general core budgets of multilateral organisations.
