Working with partner humanitarian agencies DFID looks to ensure that the assistance and protection needs of children, especially the under -fives are addressed with urgency when a crisis occurs. As part of DFID’s regional response to the Syria crisis for example, DFID partners including UNICEF and specialist health NGOs are providing primary health services, including routine immunisation and malnutrition screening for under-5s. DFID is also funding child friendly spaces, which are accessible to accompanied under-5s, and services to unaccompanied and separated children. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/10/2014 answer text <p>South Sudan’s leaders need to take ultimate responsibility for the humanitarian situation, and the UK continues to urge the government and opposition to act now to stop the fighting and start to build a lasting peace and make every effort to allow aid to quickly reach their people.</p><p> </p><p>In the meantime, the need for life-saving humanitarian assistance and delivery of basic services remains critical. During my visit to South Sudan in September this year, I raised the issue of food security in discussions with Government. The UK engages with the relevant ministers, ministries and sector working groups and through the Government Partner Forum. DFID-funded health programmes work in close collaboration with government, and DFID support has been instrumental in pioneering a government-led health sector plan and in strengthening government health systems. A DFID-funded programme in 3 northern states of South Sudan, which works alongside government, is expected to enable 175,000 to become food secure by the end of 2014. The UK, with other donors and UN agencies, is working with the Ministry of Agriculture to agree the content and conditions necessary for signing of the Comprehensive African Agriculture Development Process Compact. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 15/10/2014 answer text <p>At the request of the Government of Sierra Leone and under the auspices of the UN, the UK is co-ordinating the international mission in Sierra Leone to control, contain and ultimately defeat Ebola. The UK has committed £125 million to help deliver a command and control hub, construct and operate 700 beds and pay for national and international staff, associated commodities and community care. The third UK aid flight arrived in Freetown on Saturday 11 October, delivering lab equipment, PPE, vehicles, and equipment and beds for the Kerry Town site. At the heart of this is the provision of 700 treatment beds in Sierra Leone, providing direct medical care for up to 8,800 patients over six months. Work is well underway on a 92 bed treatment facility in Kerrytown which will provide 12 dedicated beds specifically for healthcare workers.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>To support these new facilities, the UK is funding the WHO to train over 120 health workers every week. In combination with the training of foreign medical teams and the planned deployment of UK health professionals, the UK’s support will enhance Sierra Leone’s capacity to quickly identify, isolate and treat Ebola victims. The UK is taking a leading role in working with the countries affected and with the international community to ensure that the outbreak is contained and help reaches those in need. In total, over £25 million of British funding is supporting the global effort to contain this disease. This includes £5 million of new direct funding to help partners working on the ground like the WHO, Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières‎ to treat victims and prevent the spread of Ebola in West Africa. Through the UK's global multilateral contributions we are supporting a regional containment strategy and in addition, strengthening the outbreak response in Sierra Leone and Liberia through bilateral assistance.</p><p> </p><p>In Sierra Leone, DFID funds will be used to support improved coordination at the national level; training and equipping of health workers to competently manage Ebola cases; improved EVD case detection and supporting appropriate radio messaging and community mobilisation activities on EVD prevention and control in affected districts. In Liberia, DFID has provided chlorine and other materials for hygiene and sanitising; and training in their appropriate use. DFID programmes are ready to respond to further requests from implementing partners as appropriate. We are closely monitoring the outbreak from Sierra Leone and Liberia and internationally through DFID headquarters.
