answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/05/2018 answer text <p>The UK is a critical friend of Saudi Arabia and our strong relationship means we are able to raise difficult issues more effectively. We have led the call for unhindered humanitarian and commercial access into Yemen, including through the UK-coordinated Security Council Statement of 15 March, the Secretary of State’s visit to Riyadh in December and lobbying from the Prime Minister. Most recently, during the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s visit to London in early March, Saudi Arabia reaffirmed its commitment to work together with the UK to strengthen the UN’s mechanism for inspecting ships so that all Yemeni ports can remain fully open to commercial and humanitarian supplies. During this visit, we also agreed with the Saudi Fund for Development that we would contribute £50 million each to support development in East Africa – the ‘£100 million humanitarian aid deal’ referred to in the question.</p><p>The UK has been clear that there is no military solution to the conflict in Yemen and we have continuously lobbied all sides to urgently de-escalate the fighting and find a comprehensive political solution. DFID channels funds through UN agencies and NGOs who have been on the ground for many years in Yemen, have good access and a strong track record of delivering and monitoring assistance in difficult environments. Officials regularly monitor and review programmes to ensure they are delivering results and that no aid is diverted or misused.</p><p>DFID applies a rigorous process of due diligence, under which partners must demonstrate accountable, transparent governance structures and sound financial procedures before funding is provided. Our partners use a variety of ports of entry into Yemen, depending on where need is greatest, the type of supply being imported, and the situation on the ground at the time.</p><p> </p><p>The northern ports of Hodeidah and Saleef play a critical role in importing 80% of Yemen’s humanitarian and commercial supplies, including food, fuel and medicine. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 31/01/2018 answer text <p>The UK is providing £205 million of UK aid to Yemen in the financial year 2017/18; and also pressing other countries to take steps to increase the flow of aid to Northern Yemen. In Saudi Arabia in December last year, the Secretary of State underscored requests made by the Prime Minister the previous month for unhindered access for imports of commercial and humanitarian food, fuel and medical supplies throughout the country. The Saudi-led Coalition recently extended their window for food and fuel imports into the important ports of Hodeidah and Saleef for another 30 days (until 22 February) and we continue to monitor the situation closely.</p><p> </p><p>In the North of Yemen we are working with UN and NGO delivery partners who are operating under very difficult circumstances to reach the most vulnerable Yemenis. The UK is the 2nd largest donor to the UN Humanitarian Appeal for Yemen, which for 2018/19 is the biggest in the world, with an estimated cost of £2.96 billion intended to reach 22.2 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. This is why we have increased UK aid to Yemen to £155 million for 2017-18, and have stepped up our work with UN agencies and other partner organisations to make sure that our aid is delivered to people in dire need. We regularly monitor and review our programmes and use independent experts to monitor and verify that food and supplies reach those in need.</p><p>As pen-holder on Yemen at the UN Security Council, the UK proposed and coordinated a Presidential Statement earlier this year, calling for all parties to recognise the importance of unhindered humanitarian access.
