The Government has made it clear that we intend to retain our high existing standards of animal welfare once we have left the EU. We have some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world and we intend us to remain world leaders in the future. Defra is exploring how the principles of Article 13 of the Treaty of the Functioning of the European Union can apply in the United Kingdom after we have left the European Union. This is a comprehensive piece of work, covering all aspects of food security, including international trade and global resource sustainability.
