answer text
The Apprenticeship Levy comes into effect from April 2017; it will enable us to fund the step change needed to achieve 3 million quality apprenticeship starts in England by 2020.

Both levy and non-levy paying employers can access funding to cover the cost of an apprentice’s training and assessment. Levy paying employers will have funds available to them through the apprenticeship service and receive a 10% Government top up every month. Non-levy paying employers will contribute 10% towards the cost of training with the Government paying 90%.

The number of starts in sectors is dependent on employers recruiting apprentices that are appropriate for their business needs, and there are a number of factors which influence actual funding, such as the level of the start and the funding band, the price agreed between employer and provider and some additional payments for certain groups. Given the demand led nature of the policy, the Department has not therefore estimated the total apprenticeship funding that will be provided to fund starts in any particularly industry.

The food, farming and agri-tech industry is developing new apprenticeship standards, which will better meet the needs of the industry and provide employers with the skills they need.

answer text
The Department does not hold that information, as the Government does not set a target for how much curriculum time schools must dedicate to Physical Education (PE) or specify the sports and activities that must be taught in schools.

PE remains a compulsory subject at all four key stages in the national curriculum, and we have given schools the freedom to deliver a diverse and challenging PE curriculum that best suits the needs of their pupils.

The Chief Medical Officer has stated that children should be active for 60 minutes a day (of which 30 minutes should be during school time), and we are supporting this through a number of initiatives, including the primary PE and sport premium.

Since 2013, we have invested over £600 million to improve PE and school sport in primary schools through the primary PE and sport premium. In an independent evaluation, 84% of schools reported an increase in pupil engagement in PE during curricular time and in the levels of participation in extra-curricular activities. Research has also shown that primary schools are on average now delivering almost two hours of PE to pupils each week since the introduction of the premium.

But we know there is more to do, which is why we will also be doubling the premium from £160m to £320m per year from September 2017, using money raised by the sugar soft drinks industry levy.

answer text
We are committed to ensuring that high quality apprenticeships are as accessible as possible to all people from all backgrounds.

We have set an ambitious target to increase the proportion of apprenticeships started by people from BAME backgrounds by 20% by 2020. We are developing a programme of work which will seek to further increase BAME apprenticeship starts in areas where they have fewer opportunities. We are targeting the national `Get in Go Far` marketing campaign at individuals from BAME backgrounds, including showcasing BAME apprentices in high status professional roles.

We are improving access to apprenticeships for people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. This includes implementing the recommendations from the Maynard Taskforce, published in July 2016: For the first time British Sign Language can be an alternative to English Functional Skills for those whom it is their first language; we are developing new communications and guidance products; and are looking at ways to adjust the English and maths minimum requirements to enable apprentices with a learning difficulty or disability to access apprenticeships. Where an apprentice requires further learning support because they have a condition such as dyslexia, a learning difficulty or disability, providers can claim up to £150 a month to help with the costs of the adjustments they need to fully participate in their training, and more in exceptional circumstances.

On 21 February 2017 we launched the Apprenticeships Diversity Champions Network. This network will be engaging and inspiring employers and communities to ensure that apprenticeships are represented by people from a diverse range of backgrounds and abilities, reflecting the widest spectrum of our society. The 23 members are tasked with championing disability in their own organisations and amongst their peers. They are committed to encouraging other employers to promote diversity in apprenticeships, and to championing apprenticeships in BAME communities.

Our Technical Education reforms will support young people with special educational needs and disabilities and other vulnerable groups like care leavers.
