answer text
Local authorities are responsible for planning and securing sufficient school places in their area, and supporting them to do so is one of this Government’s top priorities. This is why the Government is investing £23 billion overall in school buildings to create 600,000 new school places, open 500 new free schools and address essential maintenance needs.

Basic need funding is allocated to local authorities to help them to create new school places. This Government has allocated £960 million to local authorities in London for places needed between 2015 and 2018, including at secondary level. This is in addition to the £2 billion London received between 2011 and 2015, almost 40% of the total funding provided to local authorities to help create new places in this period.

This funding has helped to create 155,000 new school places between 2010 and 2014. Of these new places, over 30,000 have been created in 52 open free schools. There are over 60 approved new schools due to open in London in future academic years.

answer text
We recognise the importance of teaching children and young people about the importance of sun safety and the risks of skin cancer. The primary science national curriculum emphasises the need for pupils to recognise the different ways in which light from the sun can be dangerous and how they should protect their eyes. Skin cancer and other health issues can also be covered in the key stage 4 science curriculum when pupils can be taught about the impact of lifestyle factors on the incidence of non-communicable diseases. Schools can choose to include cancer awareness in their Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education lessons. The non-statutory programme of study for PSHE education enables schools to teach young people about cancer prevention, checking for cancer and other illnesses, and how to overcome worries about seeking help.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) published guidance on “Skin Cancer Prevention” in January 2011.
more like this

We have also protected the pupil premium at its current rates, worth £2.5 billion annually. Additionally, all local authorities must include a deprivation factor in their local funding formulae, through which they distribute funding to schools in their locality. It is for individual schools to decide how best to use their funding to raise the attainment of pupils, including those from deprived backgrounds, which can include visits in support of the curriculum.
more like this

answer text
The Department funds local authorities for high needs provision through the Dedicated Schools Grant. Local authorities have reported that they are planning to spend £11.62 million from this grant on children in their early years and £72.48 million on hospital education. Local authorities are able to allocate some of this funding to children who cannot attend school because of health needs.

We are not able to provide a response with an amount allocated specifically to these children as the needs of children varies amongst different local authorities, and therefore it is right that decision making on allocation of funding for special educational needs and disabilities is made at a local level.

more like this
