answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 28/04/2014 answer text <p>The Government's policy is that evolution should be taught in schools as an essential element of a rigorous scientific education; teaching creationism as science is incompatible with the delivery of a broad and balanced curriculum.</p><p> </p><p>The national curriculum requires all maintained schools to teach evolution as an established scientific theory. All academies and free schools are required to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum. The model funding agreements for all kinds of academies and free schools are being revised. The latest published version includes a specific requirement to teach evolution, and prohibits the teaching of creationism as an evidence-based theory.</p><p> </p><p>As in all areas of education, we look to Ofsted as the best and most effective lever to ensure expected standards are being achieved. All state funded schools are subject to Ofsted inspections which are required to report on the quality of education provided in the school including the quality of teaching.</p><p> </p><p>Providers in receipt of early years funding must follow clear standards to make sure children are taught the key skills they need to get a good start in life. Friend, the Secretary of State for Education, appointed Professor Julian Le Grand as Chair of a panel undertaking a review of Doncaster Children's Services, as announced in a letter dated 25 March 2013 to the then Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies. The letter is published on the Department's website: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/doncaster-childrens-care-direction-for-improvement-march-2013" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/doncaster-childrens-care-direction-for-improvement-march-2013</a>. Professor Le Grand submitted his Report to Ministers in May 2013. Professor Le Grand was subsequently asked by my hon. Friend, the Minister for Children and Families, to chair another panel to consider ways forward for Birmingham's Children's Social Care Services, as announced in a letter to the leader of Birmingham Council, Albert Bore, on 29 November 2013. The letter is also published on the Department's website: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/edward-timpson-writes-to-birmingham-city-council" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/edward-timpson-writes-to-birmingham-city-council</a>. The Report of this work was submitted to Ministers in February 2014.</p><p> </p><p>Professor Le Grand received no remuneration for his work on either Review.
