answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/06/2019 answer text <p>The Government fully recognises the urgency of acting on climate change.</p><p> </p><p>I am pleased to confirm that on 12th June, the Government laid draft legislation to set a new net zero greenhouse gas emissions target for the UK, to be delivered by 2050. This world-leading target will bring to an end our contribution to climate change. We already have a strong foundation of action and leadership to build from, having cut our emissions by 42% since 1990 while growing the economy by 72%. This world-leading target will bring to an end our contribution to climate change. Already we have made great progress – since 1990 we have reduced our emissions by 42% while growing our economy by 72%.</p><p> </p><p>Delivering a net zero target must be a joint endeavour, crossing political boundaries, and encompassing all parts of society. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 28/03/2019 answer text <p>The Government recognises that climate change is one of the most urgent and pressing challenges we face today, which is why we have set out ambitious plans in our Clean Growth Strategy to reduce emissions through the 2020s.</p><p> </p><p>The Strategy builds on the UK’s impressive progress to date; between 1990 and 2017, the UK reduced its emissions by over 40 per cent while growing the economy by more than two thirds – the best performance in the G7 on a per person basis.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to our ambitious policies and proposals in the Clean Growth Strategy, we have commissioned the Committee on Climate Change to provide advice on the implications of the Paris Agreement for the UK’s long-term emissions reduction targets, including on setting a net zero target. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 25/02/2019 answer text <p>Leaving the EU with a deal remains the Government’s top priority. This has not changed. The Government has accelerated no deal preparations to ensure the country is prepared for every eventuality. The recently updated technical notices set out the UK’s firm commitment to addressing climate change, including in a no deal scenario, and provides advice on meeting climate change requirements if there is no withdrawal agreement.</p><p> </p><p>EU exit will not affect UK emissions reduction commitments, as our ambitious emissions reduction commitments are enshrined in UK law in the Climate Change Act. Continuing discussion on global challenges such as climate change is in the UK’s and EU’s mutual interest. I have been engaging on behalf of my rt. hon. Friend the Secretary of State, including supporting international climate negotiations at COP24 where I had many constructive talks with EU counterparts. The importance of cooperation in the fight against climate change was recognised in the joint statement on behalf of President Junker and the Prime Minister on 7 February 2019, and we intend to continue building on this momentum in the coming months.</p><p> </p><p>My upcoming speech at a European young leaders’ event is a further example of how we are taking advantage of all opportunities to engage on this subject. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 12/11/2018 answer text <p>The 2007 Stern Review concluded that the impacts of unmitigated climate change could be equivalent to losing 5-20% of global GDP, with the higher range accounting for a wide range of impacts and risks. A range of scientific evidence also makes clear that the risks and impacts could be severe, with some potentially catastrophic. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s (IPCC) 5th Assessment Report and 1.5°C Special Report show that human-caused climate change has had widespread impacts on human and natural systems, for example, heatwaves are longer, hotter, and more frequent, and the sea-level is rising at a rate of 2.6 – 2.9 millimetres per year.</p><p> </p><p>The UK’s 2017 Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA) finds that climate change poses multiple risks to the UK. Communities, businesses and infrastructure will be affected by flooding and coastal change, domestic and international food production and trade could be impacted, and our natural capital (including ecosystems, soils and biodiversity) will be at risk. People’s health, wellbeing and productivity will be at risk from high temperatures, and people, animals and plants will be at risk from new and emerging pests and diseases.
