This is a more effective and efficient approach to justice as it means the CPS serve more material on the defence at a much earlier stage so they can be more robust with case management and encourage earlier guilty pleas.</p><p>The CPS is transforming the service it provides to victims through its Victim Transformation Programme. The Programme is delivering an improved Universal Service offer for all victims of crime, which will build victims’ understanding of the role of the CPS, ensure that victims understand their rights, and signpost victims to relevant support.</p><p>The Victim Transformation Programme also includes an Enhanced Service offer for adult victims of rape and serious sexual offences (RASSO). The Enhanced Service will include the offer of a meeting with a member of the prosecution team once a victim has been notified their case is proceeding to trial. This will give victims the opportunity to discuss what happens next and ask questions about the process. The Enhanced Offer will also include a dedicated Victim Liaison Officer in all CPS RASSO Units to help improve the quality of engagement with adult RASSO victims.</p><p>The Victim Transformation Programme builds on actions the CPS has already taken to improve the quality of the communications and the service it provides to victims. For example, the CPS has published an online guide for all victims of crime, which explains what they can expect when their case reaches the CPS and what their entitlements are as victims. This has had nearly 110,000 views in total since its launch in September 2022. The national Criminal Justice Board, re-instated last year by the Lord Chancellor, is a welcomed opportunity to identify and tackle the challenges faced by the criminal justice system.</p><p>The CPS rolled out a new Crown Court operating model last year. HMCPSI is currently conducting independent inspections of all 14 CPS Areas in 2021-22 as part of its Area Inspection Programme, which focuses on the quality of magistrates’ court casework, Crown Court casework and rape and serious sexual offences (RASSO) casework. Baseline reports covering the South East, North East, West Midlands, North West, London South, East of England, Yorkshire and Humber, Wessex, London North, South West, Mersey-Cheshire, East Midlands and North West have all been published on the HMCPSI website. The final report on CPS Thames and Chiltern is due to be published soon. All CPS Areas will be subject to follow-up inspections by HMCPSI in due course to evaluate progress made since the baseline report. The CPS makes a public response to all HMCPSI Area inspections, and these are available on the CPS website. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/05/2022 answer text <p>Since February, Her Majesty’s Crown Prosecution Service Inspectorate (HMCPSI) have published reports on the performance of 5 CPS Areas: London South, London North, East of England, Yorkshire and Humberside, and Wessex.</p><p> </p><p>Despite the pressures of the pandemic, the reports found improvement had been made in all the Areas. In the two London Areas, increasing caseloads and challenges in recruitment were both acknowledged by HMCPSI. However, inspectors noted that both Areas added value in aspects of their work with victims and witnesses.</p><p> </p><p>In East of England and Wessex, inspectors praised both Areas for their joint working with other criminal justice agencies and found quality decision-making around disclosure of unused material.</p><p> </p><p>The Rape and Serious Sexual Offences (RASSO) team in Yorkshire and Humberside were commended for seeking appropriate orders to protect complainants, witnesses and the public and consulting with witnesses in RASSO cases.</p><p> </p><p>Although inspectors highlighted where improvements could be made, there were aspects of strength for all the Areas, which reflects the determination of the CPS to drive improvements.</p> answering member constituency Cheltenham answering member printed Alex Chalk question first answered 23/05/2022 09:12:10 answering member 4481 label Biography information for Alex Chalk

These inspections have recognised some good work in what continues to be a very challenging environment. The CPS recognise that they still need to improve on their work with victims and witnesses and have commissioned a significant piece of research to better understand victims’ needs.
