The UK has two mechanisms for controlling overall spend on branded medicines: the voluntary scheme for branded medicines pricing and access (VPAS) and the statutory scheme for branded medicine pricing. Both schemes apply UK-wide.</p><p>The VPAS caps sales of branded medicines to the National Health Service, with the cap growing by 2% each year. Sales made above this cap are paid back by pharmaceutical companies to the Department.</p><p>All new medicines and significant licence extensions in England are assessed by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) which makes recommendations to the NHS on whether they are clinically and cost-effective. The NHS in England is legally required to fund medicines recommended by NICE within 90 days of a final recommendation being made, and offers a unique proposition for global life sciences companies, as with a single commercial deal a company can have access to a market of over 55 million people.</p><p>For unbranded generic medicines, the Department relies on competition in the market to keep prices down. This has led to some of the lowest prices in Europe and allows prices to react to the market. answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/05/2023 answer text <p>Our sympathies remain with all those affected by the side effects of sodium valproate.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has asked the Patient Safety Commissioner, Dr Henrietta Hughes, to undertake work on redress for people harmed by sodium valproate and pelvic mesh. The work is intended to focus on the views of those affected, improving the understanding of how many people have been affected and how, the case for redress and what form it could take. The work is expected to take around four months and the Patient Safety Commissioner will publish a report setting out the findings from this work. Those found guilty under the Act are subject to the full force of the law.</p><p> </p><p>Foxes are not protected for conservation purposes in England. Cage traps and snares can lawfully be used to trap foxes. Anyone using cage traps or snares has a responsibility under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 to act within the law to ensure their activities do not cause any unnecessary suffering. For instance, snares and cage traps must be checked at least once a day to prevent a captured fox (or non-target species) suffering. This government takes wildlife crime seriously and there are strong penalties in place for offences committed against wildlife. NHS England assesses the effectiveness of trust waiting time recovery plans, and publishes provider-based cancer waiting times data. Provisional data for February 2023 shows that 86.7% of patients with symptoms that might indicate cancer, who were given an urgent referral by their general practitioner to The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, were given an appointment with a consultant within two weeks of their urgent referral by the trust.
